Year 5/6 Team News

Hello Year 5/6 families, 

We hope everyone is settling into the term well. 

An important reminder that the Camp deposit of $50 is DUE TODAY. You will need to pay and confirm via Compass (or arrange payment with the front office) to secure your seat on the bus. 

CAMP 2026:

This year, our 5/6 students are headed to Coastal Forrest Lodge in Anglesea in Term 4. At the 2 night/3 day camp students will experience surfing and kayaking lessons at either Anglesea or Torquay. The camp does not host the entire cohort so is broken to into 2 seperate camps- Grade 5 Camp and Grade 6 Camp. 

Grade 5 Camp: Mon 26th-Wed 28th October and Grade 6 Camp: Wed 28th-Fri 30th October. We will be sharing plenty more information about this year's camp, closer to the date. 

What's Coming up in the Classroom in Term 3:

Reading: In Weeks 5 & 6, there is a focus on finding the main idea in a text/media. We will look at how authors use embedded clauses to share additional key information with readers. In addition to this, students will be continuing to work on reading fluency. We encourage that listening to your child read aloud once during the week as part of their homework as this will support this work. 

Writing: In Weeks 5 & 6, we are working on sentence fluency and conventions in our writing. This includes beginning sentences using a dependent clause and using embedded clauses to add key information for our reader. We will apply our knowledge to edit a given text on both paper and on a typed version. 

Numeracy: In Weeks 5 & 6, we are working through our unit on Decimals and Percentages. Students are making the connection with between fractions, decimals and percentages. To consolidate this learning, students will be completing a 'Yes Day' project that revises knowledge of financial maths, decimals and percentages. 

Inquiry: In Term 3 our inquiry unit is titled, 'What's the Difference Between Here and There?' Students have begun their digital passports by exploring Australia and are now reading and viewing about places around the world. In Weeks 5 & 6, students are exploring destinations in North America. The information in the passport will support our upcoming final project. In Week 6, we will launch the project as a cohort. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Weeks 5&6, Willy Kids Bounce Back. Students will focus on their growth mindset and look at ways to improve our growth mindset. Respectful Relationships this term explores gender and identity. This fortnight we are learning about gender steroetyping through inter-generations. 

Important Dates for Term 3:

• Regional Finals AFL Footy 9s- Tuesday 11th August. Please see Compass for event details. Students are required to make their own way to/from this event. 
• District Athletics- Wednesday 12th August   Students who have made the athletics team will be heading to Newport Athletics track to compete the 7 other schools within our district. Students will be transported to and from the track WITH THE SCHOOL. Please see compass event for event timing and ensure that permission/payment is made prior to the day.
