Hello Prep families,

What a fabulous fortnight in Prep we have had! The students enjoyed getting dramatic and immersing themselves in our storytelling incursion, and we absolutely loved celebrating the 100 days of school on Friday 31st July.  There are still many more exciting events to look forward to this term including Book Week, Footy Day and Prep Breakfast!

Our Willy Kid theme this fortnight is ‘Willy Kids are Brave’. We read ‘Jetty Jumping’ by Andrea Rowe and shared stories of moments when we have felt scared. We then discussed strategies that helped us to be brave such as asking for help, trying again and receiving encouragement from others.

100 Days of Prep 

Last week we celebrated the 100th day of Prep on Friday 31st July. It was wonderful to see the creative costumes that students chose to wear including lots of 100-year-old people, 100 items sewn on shirts and some great party clothes. We celebrated the day with lots of fun activities including an assembly, making fairy bread, and counting tubs of objects to work out which had 100 items in it. We are so proud of our Preps and the wonderful achievements that they have made after just 100 days at school. Congratulations to our students and their families on a great achievement. We cannot wait to see what the next 100 days bring! 

Prep Storytelling Incursion

This term, the Preps have been learning about the different ways we can tell stories, including written word, pictures, song and dance. For our incursion, we explored the ways we can tell stories through costumes, acting, music and talking.  Students were able to work together, dress up and act out the Dreaming story, Tiddalick the Frog. What a wonderful experience it was! 

Inquiry: What’s My Story? What’s your story?

As part of our inquiry unit this term, the Preps are looking at the different ways stories can be told. This week, we read ‘Letters to Felix’ and discussed how we can communicate and tell stories by writing letters. The Preps have been working hard to write a letter to their families about their day at school. Shortly we will be walking to our local letterbox to post the letters home to families. Keep an eye out for a letter delivery arriving in the next couple of weeks!

Term Three Specialists

This Term, all Preps will attend Specialist classes. These include Visual Art, Music, French  and Physical Education. Please see the weekly timetable below.

Parents, could you please support your child to return their library books on their given day. Please also ensure your child is dressed in their P.E. uniform and is wearing runners on the day that they have P.E. Students remain in their P.E. uniform for the entire day. 

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 - 4

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read and taking a breath at full stops. They will also discuss text features such as full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and question marks. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students are now beginning to explore digraphs. Our current focus is on CCVC and CVCC words.

Writing - Students are continuing to develop their letter formation and sound knowledge to write sentences. In particular this term, students will be reading narrative texts as a class. Students will then summarise these stories by writing a few sentences about the characters, setting, problem and solution from each text. 

Numeracy - Students are exploring the concepts of money and time. For our money topic, we are learning about each of the different Australia notes and coins, and their values. Our time topic is revising days of the week, along with exploring time to the hour. 

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is What's My Story? What's Your Story'. The Prep students are learning about the different ways stories can be told and beginning to write some special letters home. 

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.  

Respectful Relationship This term for Respectful Relationships our topic is ‘Gender Norms and Stereotypes’. We will be reflecting on the influence of gender norms and stereotypes, developing an awareness of positive and negative gender norms, challenging negative gender norms and developing appreciation and respect for differences. In Prep, these activities look like: conversations about the fact that everyone likes different things and that’s okay (e.g. everyone can like or dislike pink or soccer or fish), realising that everyone experiences the same emotions (e.g. happy, sad, angry) and can express them in similar ways.
