Learning News 5/6

Mrs Bearman & Mrs Wilson

It has been an incredibly busy and productive few weeks in Year 5 and Year 6. Our students have been diving deep into new concepts across the curriculum, showing great curiosity and persistence. Here is a look at what we have been exploring in our classrooms.

Writing

In writing, we have shifted our focus toward narrative writing. The students are learning that a great story isn’t just about what happens, but how the reader feels while reading it.

We have been experimenting with descriptive language to move beyond simple adjectives. Students are using  techniques, such as metaphors, and personification to create vivid imagery.

Maths

We have been tackling the "Triple Threat" of Stage 3 Math: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages. The goal is for students to see these as three different languages describing the same thing. We have been practicing conversions and applying them to real-world scenarios, such as calculating discounts during a sale.

Our young scientists are currently investigating Physical World: Forces. We have been exploring how different forces affect the movement of objects. We made rockets and launched them to observe forces in action.

Music

If you hear a rhythmic strumming coming from the classroom, it’s our Ukulele unit! The students are currently mastering the anatomy of the instrument and learning their first chords, such as C Major and F Major. We are currently focusing on rhythm and finger placement. We look forward to being able to play a song soon. A huge thanks to Mr Unwin for sharing your expertise with us!
