At Roselea Public School, we have a rich and vibrant cultural community. Did you know that 70% of our students have a language background other than English? This includes 30 different languages, with our most common languages being Mandarin and Korean. This brings diversity in experience, traditions and cultures, making Roselea PS the unique and amazing community it is.
On Monday, we came together and celebrated our cultural diversity in our annual Harmony Day celebrations. Harmony Day is a time to recognise and promote respect and understanding for all people from all cultural backgrounds. This day was first established in 1999 by the Australian Government. It was wonderful to see our playground a sea of orange and so many students dressed in magnificent traditional cultural attire. Throughout the day, our students participated in a variety of activities that promoted inclusiveness and respect. It is an important day on our calendar, and it was wonderful to see so many of our parents join us at our Harmony Day assembly. I was impressed with our students who stood before their peers and confidently spoke to the audience in their first language and the talent of our students who shared their culture through singing, dancing and creating music.
Our Harmony Day celebrations also coincide with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is an opportunity to build awareness of racism and promote the need to act to advance equity for all people in NSW public education. As the Principal of Roselea Public School, I am dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive school community that is free from racism. We have two staff members Mrs Mulholland and Mrs Janssen who are our go-to helpers for students and community members who have questions or concerns about racism.
In 2025 as part of Strategic Direction 3 – Creating Community Connections within our School Excellence Plan, we will be establishing a Cultural Community Committee whose primary purpose will be to look at ways to represent and strengthen our connection to the various cultures within our school community. We hope to have representatives from each cultural group who would meet together twice a term to discuss significant cultural events in the community and ways to strengthen students' sense of belonging at school. If you would be interested in representing your cultural group on this committee please complete this form.
Attendance Matters
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
The importance of arriving on time:
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
Our Playground
At Roselea we are very fortunate to have beautiful grounds with lots of space for our students to play. Next week I will meet with the team who are going to be building the new P&C immersive play space that our amazing community have fundraised for. I hope that in the coming weeks we will begin to see some changes to our back playground as this space begins to come alive. I am sure there will be some fascinating opportunities for our students to observe its construction.
Alongside this playground is our existing equipment. I have spoken with students at our recent assemblies about the importance of being safe when using this equipment. Most importantly, if there is no teacher on duty, then there is no play. I ask all parents to support us in reminding their children that the equipment is closed before and after school, as there is no teacher on duty at this time.
