Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

1/2I have had a wonderful start to the year!

We have spent time sharing our holiday adventures, as well as deepen our understanding of the importance of both the Welcome and Acknowledgment of Country.

We are now exploring informative texts, using Eric Carle’s Book of Amazing Animals to inspire us to write about different animals.

We are enjoying a ‘Who am I?’ group activity, guessing the different animals.

During Art we have been inspired by a variety of artists, like Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Andy Warhol, to create a variety of artworks using a number of different materials.

Stage 2

It has been a big week for Year 3 this week as we completed our first ever NAPLAN test.

“NAPLAN was very fun. I was excited to do it. I really enjoyed writing because I like creating stories.”  - Jocelyn

At first, we were a little nervous, but Miss Foster was so impressed with the effort that everyone put into their writing!

In English, we have been reading ‘The Thing About Oliver’, written by Deborah Kelly.

“I think it’s a good book to read because it tells people about other people with special needs. It is very interesting because it shows so many different experiences.”  - Ellie

As well as the important values and messages this book promotes, it has also enabled us to learn new vocabulary, complex sentences, use dialogue in our writing and explore the features of a narrative text.

In maths, we have learnt about place value and arrays, and how they help us organise numbers and objects.

“Learning new maths can be hard and if we rub it out, it’s okay. That’s how we learn new things.”  - Celine

We thoroughly enjoyed working on our whole school mural for Harmony Day, working with 5J to discuss what the day means to us!

“Harmony Day is important because we can share everyone’s cultures. It’s fun seeing everyone in a lot of different cultures’ clothes.” - Alex

We look forward to you hearing our beautiful singing voices at the Harmony Day assembly!

Stage 3

Stage 3 Celebrates International Maths Day with a Pi Investigation!

On International Maths Day (14/3, which in many countries is known as 3/14), Stage 3 students came together for an exciting exploration of Pi in the playground. Year 5 and Year 6 students collaborated on a hands-on investigation, where their task was to find and measure circles around them. Before diving into the activity, students reviewed key mathematical vocabulary such as circumference, diameter, and radius.

Once equipped with their knowledge, the students set out to discover circles in the playground. For each circle they found, they measured its circumference and diameter, then calculated the ratio of the circumference to the diameter. This exercise aimed to reveal the fascinating constant known as Pi.

After ample time for exploration and calculation, the students regrouped to discuss their findings. Daniel K from 6L impressed everyone by not only revealing that the correct answer was approximately 3.14, or Pi, but also by reciting Pi to an astonishing 101 digits!

This engaging activity not only celebrated the beauty of mathematics but also highlighted the curiosity and enthusiasm of our young mathematicians. What a fantastic way to honour International Maths Day!
