English

Over the past two weeks, students have been developing their narrative writing skills. They began by working in groups to generate creative ideas from picture prompts and writing engaging “sizzling starts” to hook their readers. Students then applied these skills when writing their own full narratives. One writing task required plenty of imagination, with students responding to a picture prompt titled “Moving House.” The students were then challenged to write a narrative inspired by ANZAC Day, reflecting on its significance and their understanding of the sacrifices made by those who served our country.

We were also fortunate enough to have our Instructional Teacher of Literacy, Mr Francis, visit the class and share a story he wrote many years ago called “Revenge of the Grey Leads.” Students were challenged to write a sequel to the story, continuing the adventure with their own creative ideas. They did a fantastic job building on the original storyline, and Mr Francis was very impressed with their writing skills!

EN3-CWT-01  plans, creates and revises written texts for multiple purposes and audiences through selection of text features, sentence-level grammar, punctuation and word-level language

EN3-UARL-01  analyses representations of ideas in literature through narrative, character, imagery, symbol and connotation, and adapts these representations when creating texts

Science

In Science, students have been exploring how scientific models help us explain and predict natural phenomena by examining different models of the solar system. They identified and sequenced the planets according to their distance from the Sun and explored how this distance affects how long each planet takes to orbit.

Students used research, digital models and mnemonic devices to compare planetary distances and orbital periods, demonstrating their understanding through a comparison table and justified conclusions.

PDHPE

In PDHPE, students have been learning the game of softball. Through this unit, they have been developing important team sport skills such as fielding, throwing and catching, while also learning how to work together to achieve a common goal. Softball requires players to rely on one another, communicate effectively and support their teammates during the game.

Students have also been exploring simple team strategies and how working together can help improve performance and increase their chances of success. A strong focus has been placed on sportsmanship, encouraging students to play fairly, show respect to others and demonstrate positive attitudes during games. These values align with our school motto and baseline behaviours and are important skills that will serve students well both on and off the field.
