Schools Annual Action Plan -Strengthening Mathematics and Writing Achievement

Dear Parents,

This year, our Annual Action Plan for 2026 focuses on improving student achievement in two key areas across the school:

  • Mathematics (Years 1–2): Building fluency and automaticity
  • Writing (Years 3–6): Strengthening text structure and sentence structure

These priorities reflect our commitment to ensuring every student develops strong foundational skills that support future learning success.

Mathematics Focus – Years 1–2

Goal: To improve students' achievement in mathematics by building fluency and automaticity.

In the early years, fluency is critical. When students can quickly and accurately recall number facts and apply strategies automatically, they free up valuable thinking space to solve more complex problems.

Our focus will include:

  • Daily, structured practice of number facts
  • Explicit teaching of efficient mental strategies
  • Use of concrete materials, visual models and number talks
  • Targeted small-group instruction based on assessment data
  • Regular monitoring of progress to ensure growth

By strengthening fluency and automaticity, students will develop confidence, accuracy and flexibility in their mathematical thinking.

Writing Focus – Years 3–6

Goal: To improve student achievement in Writing, particularly in text and sentence structure.

Strong writing is built on understanding how ideas are organised and expressed clearly. Our focus in Years 3–6 will be on helping students:

  • Structure different text types effectively (e.g. persuasive, narrative, informative)
  • Construct clear and varied sentences
  • Use appropriate grammar and punctuation
  • Elaborate on ideas with clarity and purpose

Teachers will provide explicit modelling, clear success criteria and structured opportunities for drafting, feedback and revision. Student writing will be regularly analysed so teaching can be responsive and targeted to learning needs.

How We Will Achieve This

Across both priority areas, teachers will:

  • Allocate dedicated time to analyse student data
  • Use research-based, high-impact teaching practices
  • Provide explicit, structured instruction
  • Monitor progress and adjust teaching accordingly

Supporting Learning at Home

Families can support this work by:

In Mathematics (Years 1–2):

  • Practising number facts in short, regular bursts
  • Encouraging quick recall through games and everyday maths conversations

In Writing (Years 3–6):

  • Talking about how texts are organised (beginning, middle, end; introduction, arguments, conclusion)
  • Encouraging complete, detailed sentences in everyday conversation
  • Providing authentic writing opportunities at home

We are excited about the impact this focused work will have on student confidence, engagement and achievement. By strengthening foundational skills in both Mathematics and Writing, we are building strong pathways for long-term success.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s learning. We look forward to sharing progress updates with our community throughout the year.

Kind regards

Megan Barber
