Five tips to hook a reluctant reader...
Got a reluctant reader at home? Here are 5 evidence-based tips to help get them hooked on reading!
Give full choice: Let your child choose what they want to read - even if it’s a comic book, magazine, joke book or sports book. Choice builds motivation..
Try graphic novels: The combination of pictures and text can make reading feel more accessible and less overwhelming for reluctant readers.
3. Use audiobooks: Listen to the audiobook while your child follows along with the words. This supports fluency, vocabulary and comprehension while making reading more enjoyable.
4. Keep sessions short: Start with 10–15 minutes and build gradually. Finishing while they’re still enjoying it is better than making reading feel like a chore.
5. Connect to interests: Cars, sport, gaming, animals, humour, Minecraft - whatever they love, find reading that connects to it.
