Our students have been exploring the musical elements of Beat, Pitch, Dynamics and Tempo. They have moved and danced to music with a steady beat and music with no beat. For example, the students have participated in Tempo exercises such as The Pony Gallop and The Shearers’ Skip. To explore Beat, they have moved to the soundtrack of Beat Patterns.

Year 1

Students have been involved in the musical elements of Dynamics, Tempo and Song and sound classifications. They have been involved with chorus and verse, responding and playing to loud and soft sounds and dancing to fast or slow music and sorting sounds. For example, they have moved slowly or rapidly to the song On My Pony, sung to the loud or soft song Who Is It? and explore verse and chorus structure to the song My Bonnie.

Year 2

Students have explored Pitch, Sound Symbols, Symbol Sequences and Sound Scaping. They have composed ostinatos and danced to the song Mr Ice Cream Man. They have also created their own symbols to a series of different sounds, and moved to a sequence of sound symbols that they have composed. They have also created a soundscape to the soundtrack Ocean Soundscape, have classified instruments, and have written a class song.

Year 3

Students have been involved in the music element of Exploring Sound. They explored Mouth Music, Sound Words, Short and Long Sounds and Vocal Rhythms. They have learned the song The Sound of Your Voice, added vocal effects to the verse Rumble in The Jungle, added instruments to the song Noises in My Head, and played the Short and Long Sounds game Sounds in the Round.

Year 4

Students have explored the musical element of Musical Pictures. Students have created images to show moods, feelings and emotions suggested by different musical pieces and visual imagery. Students have created a piece of music to the images Rush Hour and a Storyboard, and created movement to the soundtrack of Silent Movie. They have also created sound effects for a short video called Funny Foley. Year 4 students also went on an Excursion to Hamer Hall to hear the wonderful sounds of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra playing Carnival of The Animals and visited the National Gallery of Victoria to observe Australian Art.

Year 5 & 6

Students have been exploring Latin Music and Blues Music. They experienced Latin Rhythms through listening, singing and playing songs such as Mambo Gumbo, The Rhymers’ Waltz and performing a Mardi Gras. They have also choreographed and performed their class song in Latin Rhythm style. They experienced Blues Music through moving and playing to The Bo Diddley Beat and improvising in the song Late For School Blues.
