Sweet Smells of Chemistry – Exploring Esters in Unit 4

In Unit 4 of VCE Chemistry, students explore the fascinating world of organic reactions, including the formation of esters—compounds produced when alcohols react with carboxylic acids. Esters are known for their pleasant, fruity, and floral aromas, making them a key ingredient in both natural and synthetic perfumes.

During a recent practical session, students had the opportunity to create their own esters by selecting from a range of alcohols and carboxylic acids. For example, ethyl butanoate has the sweet scent of pineapple, while benzyl acetate is reminiscent of jasmine. By experimenting with different combinations, students were able to produce a variety of distinctive and aromatic esters.

The hands-on experience not only reinforced key chemical concepts but also filled the lab with an array of unexpected and delightful fragrances. Let’s just say, by the end of the session, the chemistry students were smelling far more like a perfume counter than a science lab!
