Year 9 Careers Week

ACU Immersion Day - Ballarat - Day 1

Year 9 students enjoyed an engaging day at Australian Catholic University (ACU) Ballarat on Monday, where they had the opportunity to explore careers in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Education through a range of hands-on activities.

Students experienced what these professions involve by participating in practical sessions. In Occupational Therapy, students completed activities designed to demonstrate how everyday tasks can become challenging, including using assistive tools to button clothing, putting on socks, and spreading jam using their non-dominant hand. The Physiotherapy session challenged students to identify bones and muscles on a group member, while the Education session focused on communication skills through a Lego-building activity where students had to give clear instructions without being able to see the model. In Nursing, students explored basic health checks by measuring each other’s vital signs.

The day was also made extra special thanks to ACU’s hospitality, with students enjoying a slice on arrival at the campus café and a delicious chicken burger lunch. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore potential career pathways while gaining a practical insight into university life.

VETDSS Taster Day - Day 2

Year 9 students  attended the VET DSS Exploration Day, where they had the opportunity to learn about Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students (VET DSS).

The day provided students with the chance to explore the wide range of courses available through HDSC, Baimbridge, SWTAFE and Monivae. They gained valuable insight into how VET DSS combines senior secondary studies with practical, hands-on training, helping them explore future career pathways and make informed subject selections for Years 10 and 11.

Exploring Careers in Healthcare and Business - Day 3

Students visited the Western District Health Service (WDHS), where students enjoyed a guided tour of the hospital and learned about the many career opportunities available within the health sector. Staff also shared information about the WDHS GAP Year Program before students visited the Nurse Education Centre to take part in a range of hands-on activities.

The day concluded with presentations from local business owners, giving students the opportunity to meet, speak with and hear firsthand about a variety of career pathways. A big thank you to Fushy from Two Doors, Kinga from Finchetts, Diz from Fringe Benefits and Mel from HILAC for sharing their experiences, discussing their career journeys and inspiring our students to explore the many opportunities available within our local community.

Portland Industry Tour - Day 4

Students travelled to Portland to visit the Port of Portland and the Alcoa Portland Aluminium Smelter as part of their career exploration program.

Throughout the day, students toured both workplaces, spoke with employees from a range of roles, and gained valuable insight into the operations of each industry. The visits highlighted the many career pathways and employment opportunities available in the region, helping students make connections between their learning and future career possibilities.

Year 10 Work Experience

Over the past week, our Year 10 students have been completing work experience placements across a wide range of local businesses and industries.

This valuable opportunity allowed students to experience the day-to-day operations of different workplaces, develop practical skills, and gain a better understanding of potential career pathways. We thank all of the businesses and organisations that generously hosted our students and helped provide such a positive and rewarding experience.
