Hockey Girls Finish 3rd at State Championships
Congratulations to our Girls Hockey team, who achieved an outstanding 3rd place at the SSV Primary Girls State Hockey Finals in Melbourne last week. This is a fantastic accomplishment and one that our entire school community can be incredibly proud of.
As expected, the standard of hockey at the tournament was exceptionally high, and our girls were fantastic throughout all of their games. They went undefeated in their first two round-robin matches, recording convincing victories against Toorak (4–0) and Preston PS (7–2).
Their final round-robin game was against the equally undefeated Hamilton & Alexandra College. With a place in the final on the line, it proved to be a game of the highest quality, with both teams displaying outstanding skill, determination and teamwork.
Our girls made an excellent start and took an early 3–1 lead. However, Hamilton & Alexandra College fought back strongly, eventually taking control of the match and securing a thrilling 5–4 victory. They went on to win the final convincingly.
I would like to commend all of our players for the way they conducted themselves throughout the entire journey, from Division through to State level. Given that most of the girls do not regularly play competitive hockey, reaching the State Championships and finishing third is a remarkable achievement. They should be extremely proud of their efforts.
A sincere thank you to Narelle Dalley for coaching the girls and preparing them so well for each tournament. The girls have certainly learnt a great deal in a short period of time, and Narelle’s guidance and support have played an important role in their success.
Finally, thank you to all of the family members who have supported the girls every step of the way. Your encouragement, enthusiasm and commitment have been greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to our Girls Hockey team on an outstanding State campaign — you have done yourselves and our school proud!
Footy Colours Day
We had a fantastic day last Monday for our annual Footy Colours Day. It was great to see so many students dressed up in their teams’ colours and enjoying the activities on offer.
The students walked down to the soccer fields after lunch and participated in kicking, handballing, marking and tackling drills. They also had the chance to participate in some mini games. The day concluded with our traditional Staff/Parent vs Grade 6 game for the ‘Stevo Cup’ which featured a surprising amount of skill (I think a few of the staff are still recovering).
The main purpose of this day was to raise money for the Fight Cancer Foundations and we are very pleased to announce that we have contributed $625.
I would like to thank South Bendigo FC, AFL CV and our very own SRC for their help organising the day and running the activities. I would also like to thank the Spring Gully Soccer Club, parents and staff for making this such a successful day.
Sandhurst Division Athletics
Congratulations to all of the students who represented the School at the Sandhurst Division Athletics Championships on Monday. We had a number of outstanding individual performance on the day and our relay teams ran superbly.
Our 11 Years Girls and 11 Years Boys relay teams both finished 2nd and will now progress to the Regional final next term, whilst our 12 Years Boys finished 4th.
Individuals who have progressed to the Regional Championship on Monday the 12th of October (2nd Monday of Term 4), include:
Max H - 1st in the 12 Years Boys Hurdles
Sonny R - 1st in the 11 Years Boys 200m and 2nd in the 100m
Lenny F – 2nd in the 11 Years Boys Long Jump
Hudson C – 2nd in the 10 Years Boys 1500m
Dusty M – 2nd in the 10 Years Girls 1500m
These students will be provided with more details early next term.

Max H – 3rd in the 12 Years Boys 100m
Remi M – 3rd in the 11 Years Girls Long Jump

Auslan News
In the school holidays from 21st – 27th September, people all around Australia, and internationally, will be celebrating National Week of Deaf People which coincides with International Week of Deaf People and International Day of Sign Languages!!
National Week of Deaf People in Australia is a time to celebrate Deaf communities, their language, culture and history. It is also a time to recognise individuals and groups in the Deaf community for their achievements.
The SGPS students have been learning about this week-long celebration and the meaning of the colours in the Deaf Flag.
See if your child/ren can teach you about the Artist who designed the official Deaf Flag, Arnaud Balard, and share what some of the colours in his flag design represent.
To finish the term, Grade Preps have continued with their topic on School signs, including: Principal Trezise, Assistant Principal Parkes, teacher, students, school, class, bell, wash hands, canteen, time, play time, lunch time, bell time, home time, finished, line up. The Prep students have been playing Memory with school picture cards. They have also drawn Principal Trezise, Assistant Principal Parkes, Mrs Riordan and their class teacher to share and sign with the class. There have been some wonderful true-to-life drawings produced by the Preps and some fabulous signing of teachers in Auslan! 😊
Grade 1-2s have been enjoying learning some signs for the ARTS:
Visual Arts signs, include: Art, Gallery, Painting, Make, Paint, Draw, Paper, Pen, Pencil, Texta, Crayon, Sew, Knit, Glue, Scissors, Mess and Clean.
Students have been encouraged to teach Mrs Leed some Auslan signs to use in her Art room!!
Performing Arts signs, include: Music, Dance, Dancer, Sing, Drama/Show/Theatre, Clown, Puppet, Funny, Laugh, Dress Up, Ballet, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Flute, and Band.
Students have been encouraged to teach Ms Briggs some Auslan signs to use in the Music room!!
Ms Leed and Ms Briggs aren’t aware yet, but I will test them at the end of the week 😊
Students have really enjoyed interpreting some Visual Arts signs and locating matching pictures on an “I SPY” Art Board. They have also enjoyed doing a Search, Find and Sign word search for Visual and Performing Arts signs where they have had to sign the words with a partner as they find them in the word search.
The Grade 3-4 students have signed their Meal Times Learning Tasks for this term, having chosen a family meal time to sign and the food and drink signs for their chosen meal. The Grade 3-4s worked hard on this task to learn their chosen signs and should be commended for their efforts!! Grade 3-4s have started their new topic on House Items ready for Term 4. Many of these signs are very easy and can be associated to the item in some way. Our new signs include: House, Cupboard, Door, Clock, Kettle, Deep Fryer, Drawers, Chair, Window, TV, Table, Toilet, Barbeque, Blender, Sink, Tap, Light/Lamp, Fridge, Oven, Microwave, Rubbish Bin, Scales, Kitchen, Couch, Bed, and Room.
Grade 5-6s have been learning signs for Professions/Occupations, including: Teacher, Doctor, Nurse, Firefighter, Dentist, Police Officer, Chef, Hairdresser, Astronaut, Pilot, Postman, Vet, Mechanic, Soldier, Artist, Farmer, Musician, Photographer, Singer, Carpenter, Scientist, Worker, Waiter, Sailor, Business Person, Sports Person and Builder. Some Grade 5-6 students have taken this topic and run with it, already attempting to have-a-go at signing some simple sentences about family members and friends and their occupations, for a friend to practise interpreting!!
I would like to encourage all students to continue practising their signs and the fingerspelling alphabet over the school holidays, and just enjoy using their Auslan for signs and sentences they might know as they go about their daily activities!
