What A Great First Term We Have Had in 5/6MR!

The Ghost In My Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang

This term in Literacy we have worked on our first Novel Study using the book The Ghost In My Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang. A Ghost in My Suitcase is an award-winning children’s novel about 12-year-old Celeste, who travels to China to scatter her mother’s ashes. There, she discovers her grandmother is a ghost hunter and that she has inherited this rare, dangerous, and magical gift. A Ghost in My Suitcase is about loss and healing, the importance of family and friendship, finding the strength within to overcome emotional and physical struggles. We loved reading this book as a class and learnt a lot about Chinese mythology and culture.

John Hannah House Visit

Early in the term, we visited John Hannah House. Our visit was around the time of Lunar New Year so we enjoyed doing some mindful colouring and wordfinds with the residents. The residents then showed us their wonderful dragon they had made to celebrate.

Summer Gala Day

Gala Day was a big highlight for us this term. We could choose from Teeball, Volleystars, Cricket or Tennis. Everyone enjoyed our school practices and the two days where we went offsite were a lot of fun. We all tried our absolute best and were supportive and encouraging to each other. We can’t wait for Winter Gala Days next term.

Buddies

Meeting our Buddies for the first time was the best experience. We were all so excited and they were so cute. We have met up with our Buddies lots of times through the term. We have eaten lunch together and helped them with some activities. Our favourite activity was when we had to draw ourselves and our Buddy together. It was so fun to work with them and we were very impressed with their drawing skills.

Incursion

To kick off our Literacy unit on Animal Adaptations, we participated in an Incursion from Reptile Encounters. We learnt about the different animal adaptations that can occur such as Behavioural Adaptations, Structural Adaptations and Physiological Adaptations. We met Shrek the Green Tree Frog, Cheryl the Spiny Leaf Stick Insect, Tiny the Olive Python, Snappy the Saltwater Crocodile and many more. It was awesome to be up and close with these animals and we learnt so much from Bryce.
