5/6 CLASSROOM

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope all our Grade 5/6 families had a lovely break and enjoyed some time together. It’s been lovely to have everyone back in the classroom, sharing holiday stories and settling in again. We have plenty to look forward to this term, and I’m looking forward to making the most of our time together, especially as our Grade 6 students prepare to finish their primary school journey.
English
We have begun reading our class novel, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, and exploring the different parts of a narrative. Using the narrative mountain, we are learning how stories move from an introduction through a build-up and climax to a resolution. As we read, we are looking at how these elements appear in the novel and how the author brings Morrigan’s story to life.
Maths
In Maths, we have wrapped up our decimals unit and completed an end-of-unit assessment to see how students’ understanding has developed. Our fact fluency focus this week has been multiplication, before we move on to another operation next week. We’ll also be starting our measurement unit, giving students opportunities to put their maths skills into practice.
RE
In RE, we have been exploring Jesus’ mission and how we can live out his message in the world around us. In a recent lesson, students chose something they would like to change in the world and considered actions they could take to help make a difference. It was lovely to hear their thoughtful discussions as they shared ideas, listened to one another and considered ways to support the causes they care about.
Annabelle Cleeland visit
On 16 September, we welcomed Annabelle Cleeland to St Mary’s to speak with our senior students about civics, citizenship and her role in Parliament. It was lovely to see the students getting involved, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their ideas for improving our town. They had plenty to contribute, and we may even have a few future politicians among our senior students.
