Plant Production and Ag Science & Technology

Year 11 Plant Production students have been working on their plots where they are experimenting with different rates of fertiliser for wheat. This is a long experiment, and they are just halfway through. Students have been measuring their plants and cleaning their plots on a weekly basis, and the last week they were measuring the pH of the soil trying to find out if the different rates of fertiliser have affected the chemical composition of the soil.

Year 11 ATAR have been working on their experiment about salinity in soils. The objective of the “Salinity trial” is for the students to understand how soils’ degradation affects some crops and why we need to look after the soils and the environment. This has been a great opportunity for students to set their own trial and find out what is happening with the plants with different levels of soil's salinity.

Year 12 Plant Production is finishing their experiment about different depths for seeding, so this week they will measure their plants for last time. Once all the information has been collected, they will discuss and present a report about their findings. During the trial time the students have been very committed to their crops, by watering and weeding them, and of course they are always trying to show off which is the best crop.

Mathematics

This term, our Mathematics classes have been exploring a wide range of practical topics that connect classroom learning with real world situations.

The Year 11 General Mathematics students have been studying graphs and statistics, with a particular focus on how data can be displayed, interpreted and sometimes used to mislead people. Students have examined different types of graphs and considered how choices such as scale, layout and missing information can influence the way data is understood. This has helped them become more critical and thoughtful when reading statistics in the media, advertising and everyday life. The Year 11 ATAR Mathematics students have also been analysing statistics, developing their skills in interpreting data sets and using graphics calculators to generate histograms and boxplots.

In Year 12 General Mathematics, students have been investigating global time zones and GPS coordinates. As part of this topic, they have applied their knowledge to plan a worldwide holiday across multiple time zones. This has involved calculating time differences and interpreting location coordinates.

Finally, the Year 12 ATAR Mathematics students have been studying project networks. They have explored how tasks can be organised, sequenced and allocated efficiently, including how workers can be assigned to specific tasks to complete projects in the most effective way. This topic has shown students how mathematics can be used in workplace planning, management and decision making.
