The Importance of Reading
Reading is a fundamental skill that plays an important role in every child’s learning and development. It supports students in building strong literacy skills, expanding their vocabulary and improving their ability to understand and communicate ideas. Through reading, students develop imagination, creativity and the ability to think critically about the world around them.
Regular reading helps children become more confident learners by strengthening comprehension, concentration and problem-solving skills. It allows students to explore different cultures, experiences and perspectives while developing curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Whether reading fiction, non-fiction, magazines or digital texts, every reading opportunity contributes to a child’s growth.
At Brookside, we are committed to supporting every student’s literacy development. Some students participate in targeted Literacy Focus Groups in the Hub, where additional support can be provided and meet individual learning needs. These small-group sessions allow students to develop specific reading skills, build confidence and make progress at their own pace.
Students also have access to a wide range of books through our school library, as well as Epic – an online digital library that provides access to thousands of engaging texts.
Families can support children’s reading development by sharing books, discussing stories and creating positive reading routines at home. Together, we can help students build the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed to become successful, independent readers.
