The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features a recount from Amasha (Year 4) as she shares one of the happiest days of her life – playing and winning the basketball grand final! I trust you enjoy it just as much as I did.

The Day of the Grand Final

Yesterday, Saturday 19th September 2026, was one of the most exciting and unforgettable days of my life. It was the basketball grand final and the end of my very first season.

At the beginning of the year, I barley knew how to even play basketball. I had to learn how to dribble, pass, defend and work as part of a team. I never imagined that my first season would end up with a grand final.

A few days before we won our semi-final. When the final siren rang BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I was bursting with happiness – we had made it to the grand final!

When I woke up on grand final day, my stomach was doing somersaults. I was excited, nervous and a tiny bit scared. At the court, basketballs went BOOM, shoes were squeaking and the crowd was cheering. I looked down and saw my number on the back of my singlet.

One thing that made the season extra special was having my older sister on the same team. She was my basketball guide and biggest supporter. Since she will play for a different team next season, this was our last season playing together, I wanted to make every second count.

When the game started, my nerves were bouncing off like popcorn in a hot pan.

BOUNCE! The ball hit the floor.

SQUAK! Our shoes raced across the court.

SWISH! The ball went through the hoop.

Soon my nerves disappeared, our team passed, defended, scored and encouraged each other. Nobody gave up. Then the final seconds came, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM my heart was pounding.

BEEEEEEEEEP!

We had just won the grand final!

I jumped, laughed, screamed and hugged my teammates.

Then the referee called out my number ……………42. I couldn’t believe it – I had just been chosen as the Most Valuable Player!

As I held my medal, I felt incredibly proud. It wasn’t just about winning, it represented all of the effort, determination and hard work I had put into my first basketball season.
