Dear Clayton North Primary School Community

We are one week away from the end of Term 2, six months into the year already!

The school continues to be a busy place, and we have had some wonderful opportunities for students to be involved in whole school events this term. A large majority of students participated in the World of Maths Hand-on event, working in groups to solve problems and developing their confidence in numeracy. Brainstorm Productions offered an engaging theatrical performance titled ‘Protectors’, providing practical strategies for bullying prevention, online safety, social skills and emotional regulation.

Year 3 and Year 5 students completed the NAPLAN tests earlier this term. This annual assessment tests essential skills in reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy, providing a snapshot of children’s progress against national standards. The results are used to help identify students who need greater challenge or extra support, as well as to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching and learning programs. Individual student reports will be available to parents in July.

Over the last two weeks, Jake and I have met with groups of students from Year 4-6 to complete the department’s Attitudes to School Survey (AToSS), an annual survey conducted across all schools. The survey is an opportunity to obtain formal feedback from students on their perspectives and experiences at school. The results assist schools in planning programs and activities to improve children’s engagement, their wellbeing and learning.

92 students completed the survey and once again, the data is positive this year. The percentage of overall positive responses in the measures of:

  • Learning: Effective Teaching, Teacher-Student Relationships, Learner Characteristics: 80% - 98%;

  • Experience at School: Social Engagement, Student Safety, Experience of Bullying: 75% - 100%

  • Student Health & Wellbeing: Individual Social & Emotional Wellbeing, Physical & Mental Health, Emotional & Relational Engagement: 79% - 86%.

Next term, staff will unpack the data to identify key areas of focus and plan targeted actions to further improve student experiences.

We have begun implementing the first two Positive Classroom Management Strategies – Classroom Expectations and Classroom Procedures and Routines. The practices are based on the guiding principle that behaviour can be taught with explicit teaching and positive reinforcement, with the aim of fostering a supportive learning environment that enhances students' social and emotional development. The morning routine when children first arrive at school plays a key role in providing students with a predictable and structured start to the day, helping them feel safe, settled and ready to learn.

Funding Success for Solar Panels

I am thrilled to announce that our application for funding through the SRL Community Funding Projects Round 2, has been successful, with our school receiving $74,000 to install solar panels.

The project will reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs while providing students with valuable learning opportunities about renewable energy, sustainability and environmental responsibility. We look forward to creating a greener school and inspiring our students to become future leaders in sustainability.

It is anticipated that the installation will be completed during the upcoming school holiday period, and we look forward to returning in Term 3 to see this exciting new addition on the Year 1/2  building roof.

Staffing update

Bronwyn has been approved leave for 12 months to explore a different role relating to disability inclusion, an area that she has had deep experience in at Clayton North. We wish her well in this new challenge and look forward to her return in mid-2027. In her absence, a replacement Art teacher will lead and guide our students in this creative space.

Jenny is due back from her adventure in NT and will resume her role as the Performing Arts teacher and Wellbeing Leader. We are grateful to Carmen, who has done a brilliant job in fulfilling her responsibilities as the PA teacher this term!

I also wish to acknowledge Betty, who very ably stepped in to be the Year 1/2A classroom teacher this term.

Wishing all students and familes a safe and enjoyable term break!
