Science & Technology – Term 3 Update (Weeks 1–4)

Our Science learning is off to an exciting start this term! Students across the school will be investigating how living things and objects interact with the world around them through hands-on investigations, scientific discussions and engaging design challenges. Here's a look at what each year level will be exploring over the next four weeks.

Prep – On the Move

Our Prep students are beginning their On the Move unit, where they will investigate how things move. They will explore the different ways objects can move, identify push and pull forces, and discover how the size and shape of an object can affect its movement. Through games, playground investigations and exploring a variety of toys, students will observe, compare and describe movement while developing their scientific observation skills.

Year 1/2 – Survive and Thrive

Year 1 and 2 students will begin learning about the basic needs of living things through the Survive and Thrive unit. They will investigate how plants and animals depend on food, water, air and shelter to survive, compare the needs of different living things, and explore how habitats provide everything organisms need. Through observations and investigations, students will begin to understand the important relationship between living things and their environments.

Year 3/4 – Sustain the Chain

Students in Years 3 and 4 will explore ecosystems through the Sustain the Chain unit. They will investigate food chains and food webs, discover how plants and animals depend on one another for survival, and examine how changes to one part of an ecosystem can affect many other living things. Students will use scientific models, discussions and investigations to deepen their understanding of the connections within our natural world.

Year 5/6 – Desert Survivors

Our Year 5 and 6 students are beginning the fascinating Desert Survivors unit. They will investigate how plants and animals have adapted to survive in harsh desert environments by exploring structural features and behaviours that help conserve water, regulate temperature and avoid predators. Through hands-on investigations and scientific inquiry, students will gather evidence to explain how adaptations enable living things to survive and thrive in some of Earth's most extreme environments.

We look forward to another exciting month of scientific discovery as students ask questions, investigate ideas, collect evidence and develop their understanding of the world around them.
