Year 5/6

 In Science this term we have been exploring electricity and how circuits work. Students have investigated how electrical energy can be transformed into light. There has been a lot of organised chaos as students participated in hands-on challenges building simple circuits, including circuits with two batteries and two light bulbs.

The lessons have been lots of fun, with students designing and creating their own switches using everyday materials such as paperclips and split pins, and discovering how a switch can control the flow of electricity. We may have short-circuited our circuit a couple of times before realising we hadn’t actually created a switch. The students were surprised to learn that the human body can also conduct electricity and help complete a circuit!

To demonstrate their understanding, students created and labelled scientific diagrams of open and closed circuits, showing how electricity needs a continuous pathway to flow.

Religion

In Religion this term, students have been learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation and the important role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. They have explored passages from both the Old and New Testaments, identifying where the Holy Spirit is present and considering what these stories teach us about God’s presence and guidance. Students have also made connections between Confirmation and their Baptism, learning how Confirmation strengthens and deepens the gifts they received through Baptism. As they prepare for this important Sacrament, students are developing an understanding of the role of the Bishop, the apostolic Church and how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can guide them to live out and share their faith. 

As part of their learning, students also worked together to create a classroom display celebrating their peers who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This provided an opportunity for students to show their support and celebrate this important step in their faith journey.
