In Maths this term, K, 1, and 2 have been learning all about measuring 3D objects. We began by measuring ourselves and then moved on to objects, which enabled us to explore the many ways we can measure. We ask questions, choose informal units of measure, and estimate how many might be equal to an object's length, height, width, mass, volume, surface area, and distance around (perimeter or circumference). We make informal recordings of all this information. Year 2 have now begun to see the need for formal units, such as centimetres and metres, depending on the size of the objects. We have also begun to realise that we can reason out an answer by iterating unit of measure, finding length and width to multiply for area, and using area to reason layers to find the cubed volume of an object's interior space. This inquiry has been keeping us busy for the past few weeks as we investigate rectangular prisms, cylinders, cubes and more unusual objects such as furniture.
