Year 1 - Newsletter

What’s been happening in our classrooms:

LITERACY: Over the last two weeks, students have been

revising sounds ai, ay, ee, ea and _ _ y, which we use at the ends of words such as happy, jelly and twenty. This week we spent some time learning about homophones. We have done some work decoding and learning the meaning of homophones that contain the ea and ee graphemes to assist us to use them correctly in our sentence writing.

MATHS: We have begun our place value unit, exploring the magic number 10. Students have spent time building groups of 10 and finding different ways to record a group of 10 items so it is easy and quick to count large collections. As a class we became so good at this that we were able to count up all the blocks in our room- can you guess how many we got up to?!

INQUIRY: As part of our ‘How I can be the greatest version of me’ unit, Students have been learning what personal strengths they have that make them unique and special. Our homework presentations that link to this topic will begin next week.

WELLBEING: We have been discussing different emotions, finding ways to recognise and identify our own and those that others may be feeling. We have also been describing different situations that may make us feel a particular emotion.

Important dates:

Monday, 9th March: Labour Day- No school

*Inquiry presentations begin this week

Thursday, 2nd April: Last day of Term One.

Reminders:

Home Reading: We ask that green reader folders are brought to school each day so students can read in class and change over their readers.
