Year 3 - Middle Unit

This week marks the conclusion of two units of work that students have been exploring since the beginning of Term 1.
In Literacy, students are putting the finishing touches on their “Voice of Change” persuasive writing pieces. It has been wonderful to see students writing so passionately about changes they would like to see in the world. Topics have ranged from ideas such as building a swimming pool at WPS or opening a movie theatre in Woodend, to more global issues, including deforestation and the use of single-use plastics.
In Numeracy, students are showcasing their understanding of Place Value through an applied mathematics task. In this activity, students manipulate a number created by applying a secret numerical code to the letters of their name. This task allows them to demonstrate their understanding of how numbers can be partitioned, rearranged, and represented in different ways.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN begins next Wednesday for our Year 3 students. Over the past few weeks, students have been completing NAPLAN-style practice tasks to help familiarise themselves with the format of the assessments. This preparation helps students understand what to expect and aims to reduce some of the worry or uncertainty that can come with sitting formal assessments.
During some of the NAPLAN assessments, students have the option to have the text read to them. If you would like your child to access this support, they will need to bring a pair of wired headphones to school. These headphones must be able to plug into the iPad’s headphone jack. Unfortunately, we have experienced difficulties in the past with Bluetooth headphones not connecting to the iPads, which can cause unnecessary stress for students during the test.
Camp
Year 3 Camp is fast approaching. Thank you to all the parents who expressed interest in volunteering to attend camp. We greatly appreciate your willingness to support this important experience for our students.
The parents who will be attending camp with us are:
Brooke McInnes
Jackie Fletcher
Rhyse Allen
We are very grateful for their support and look forward to a fantastic few days of adventure, learning, and fun.
We will also be reaching out to other parents who expressed interest in volunteering to see if they would like to assist with future events and excursions throughout the year.
If you have any questions regarding the above, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher via woodend.ps@education.vic.gov.au
