Foundation Unit

This fortnight in Phonics students received some new decodable texts that have been practicing in class. Thank you to those who are continuing to practice these at home too and recording this information in the student reading diaries. Last week, we also introduced 6 more letters/sounds - m,d,o,g,c, and f. Students have been using these letters, along with the previously taught s,a,t,p,i,n, to create and decode CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. The Foundation students have also had daily handwriting practice to help them form these letters correctly.

In our Reading and Writing lessons, students have continued to work on sound counts and identifying the first (initial) sound in a word. This week we have been learning to write a simple retell about the beginning, middle and end of the text.

In Maths, students have been working on reading numbers and using concrete materials or drawings to represent the number. Students have been practicing organising their concrete materials or drawings in a way that is easy for someone to count how many there are (subitising). We have also just introduced the topic of Mass and Capacity, and will continue to allow students to explore these concepts over the next week.

In Inquiry, students presented their first ‘Show and Tell’ last week, about communities that they are a part of. A huge thank you to families that helped their child prepare for this, or assisted them with packing props to help remind them of the topic when it was their turn to present. We have also started our family history projects and the students have been so excited to discuss their milestone photos with the class. We hope to have these posters hanging up in the hallway sometime next week, so hopefully you’re able to pop in at some stage and see all the wonderful effort that students have put into their projects.

Foundation students attended their very first Assembly yesterday. The students were very excited to see the whole school, student awards, and sing the national anthem. We were extremely proud of how they conducted themselves during the event.
