Positive Behaviour for Learning at COHR
We are excited to share that starting this year, our school is working towards developing a new whole-school behaviour framework called Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). We are undertaking this exciting journey in partnership with MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools).
PBL is a framework developed over four years which focuses on building consistent, school-wide values and expectations for all students. Its purpose is to create a positive school climate and improve student engagement.
What is PBL?
PBL is an evidence-based approach used in many schools across Australia and internationally. It supports schools to:
- Clearly define and explicitly teach positive behaviours
- Create consistent expectations across all classrooms and playground areas
- Recognise and celebrate positive behaviour
- Support students to make safe and respectful choices
What this means for our school?
Over the next four years, we will:
- Develop a small set of clear school-wide values
- Teach students what these values look like in action
- Use consistent language across the school
- Celebrate students who demonstrate our shared expectations
- Continuously review and refine our practices
Working together
Families will play an important role in reinforcing positive behaviours. As the first step in our PBL journey, we will review our current school expectations to ensure that all stakeholders—students, parents, and staff—have the opportunity to share their perspectives on the key values that best reflect the needs of our school community. The staff have already started this process and have created a shortlist of values.
Next week, a google form will be sent out to parents. We ask that you take a minute to think about which values you believe are most important in our school and fill in the google form accordingly. The students will also be given the opportunity to vote on the values in the coming weeks.
We are looking forward to working in partnership with our community as we develop this important framework and continue to strengthen our positive school culture.
