Italian Term News

Students have made a great start to the year with learning Italian.
Our learning so far…….
Our Preps have been introduced to the Italian language. They began by locating Italy on the world map and discussing where it is in relation to Australia. This helped students develop an understanding of Italy’s place in the world and its connection to us. They were given the opportunity to share other languages they speak or hear at home. Students also started learning basic Italian greetings. They have been practicing how to greet their teacher and peers, building their confidence in using simple conversational language. In addition they have begun learning the Italian alphabet with such enthusiasm and interest.
Our Year 1 and 2
To begin the term, students worked together to brainstorm their Italian learning goals. As a class, they discussed what they would like to achieve this year, from learning new words and phrases to feeling more confident speaking Italian. Students have also started learning functional language to help them express their feelings in Italian. Some of the phrases included I’m happy, I’m sad and I’m excited. Through fun speaking activities, students practiced asking and answering questions about how they feel. It has been fantastico to see them confidently exchanging their feelings with their peers using simple sentences.
Our Year 3 and 4.
Students explored our school theme, “Our Best together, Christ beside me” and learnt how to say it in Italian. They reflected on how this theme connects to their own Italian learning goal, thinking about how they can support one another in confidence and with kindness. Students have been developing their functional language skills by learning the days of the week and the months of the year in Italian. They have practiced asking and answering questions such as “ When is your birthday? And my birthday is in… “. Students have also made connections between the months in Italian and English, identifying common similarities in spelling and pronunciation.
Year 5 and 6
To begin, students learnt to say and reflected on our school theme “Our best together, Christ beside me “. Students discussed what this theme means to them and how they can live it out in their learning. Each student created two personal learning goals for the year. These goals will help guide their progress and encourage responsibility for their own learning in Italian. Their functional language focus has been using the verb “posso avere” ( May /Can I have…?). Students have been practicing polite classroom requests using vocabulary related to school and classroom items. They have been exploring important grammar concepts like masculine and feminine nouns and definite articles. Students have been learning how nouns change depending on gender and how the definite article must match the noun.
I am very proud of the enthusiasm and effort of all students so far this year and I look forward to assisting students in building their Italian skills and reaching their goals.
