SSV Eureka Year 8 Volleyball

On Thursday 28th August BHS took two teams (Year 7 Boys and Year 7 Girls) to the SSV Eureka Year 7 Volleyball competition held at Daylesford Secondary College.

The Year 7 Boys had a 5 team Round Robin competition with a Grand Final. They had matches against Phoenix Secondary College (2 sets to 0 sets), Daylesford Secondary College (0 sets to 2 sets), Mount Rowan Secondary College (2 sets to 0 sets) and Woodmans Hill Secondary College (2 sets to 0 sets). 3 wins secured the team a place in the Grand Final and a rematch against Daylesford Secondary College. In the Grand Final the BHS team took the first set only for Daylesford to take the second set square it all 1-1. In the fifth and final set the BHS team held its nerve to secure the win 2 sets to 1 set and be declared the Eureka Champions.

The Year 8 Girls had a 7 team Pool Play competition. They were part of Pool B alongside Daylesford College (0 set to 2 sets) and Beaufort Secondary College (2 set to 0 sets). Mount Clear College, Mount Rowan Secondary College, Phoenix Secondary College & Woodmans Hill Secondary College made up the Pool A.

The one win against Beaufort was enough to secure the BHS team a Semi Final against Mt Clear College who finished on top of the Pool A. The match didn’t start off as planned with Mt Clear winning the first set, only for the BHS team to win the next two sets and claim an unlikely victory! This booked a spot in the Grand Final rematch against the home town team Daylesford Secondary College. Unfortunately the match went the same way as their Pool Play game going down 0 sets to 2 sets to finish runners up for the competition.

The Year 7 Boys team will now progress to the SSV Year 7 Boys Volleyball competition on Tuesday 9th September at the Horsham Stadium.

SSV State Senior Boys Netball

On Monday 1st September the BHS Senior Boys Netball team qualified for the SSV State Senior Boys Netball Championships at the Glen Waverly Netball Centre.

It was an earlier start for the team making a move at 6am for the long drive out to Waverly!

The Senior Boys team drew Pool B alongside Hazel Glen College (19 goals to 17 goals), Castlemaine Secondary College (13 goals to 14 goals) and Galen College Wangaratta (18 goals to 26 goals). Western Heights College, Berwick Secondary College and Wantirna College made up the Pool A.

With one win and a few close loses the team missed out on qualifying for the Semi Final portion of the competition. Head Coach Debra Hutchinson said the team was really disappointed to not qualify for the finals getting themselves into great positions in all of the games but letting some opportunities slip. The current Year 11 students are keen to hopefully make it back to the State Finals next year.

The team didn’t walk away empty handed though winning the SSV Spirit of Sport award. The Spirit of Sport award is awarded to the team that shows the best commitment and sportsmanship amongst all 8 teams who participated. Great work boys!

The team had finished in 5th place for the competition.

SSV State Intermediate Boys Soccer

On Tuesday 2nd September the BHS Intermediate Boys Soccer team qualified for the SSV State Intermediate Boys Soccer Championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre

The Intermediate Boys team drew Pool B alongside Ilim College Glenroy (0 goals to 2 goals), Notre Dame College (0 goals to 3 goals) and St Augustine's Kyabram (3 goals to 0 goals). Western Heights College, Parkdale Secondary College and Rowville Secondary College and Mary MacKillop Leongatha made up the Pool A.

With one win and a few close loses the team missed out on qualifying for the Grand Final portion of the competition. Head Coach Ian Morley said the results really didn’t indicate how well the team had played over the duration with plenty of shots on goals missing the back of the net. Ian added that he really enjoyed coaching this group and hoped the majority of the players signed up next year for the BHS Senior and Intermediate sides.

The team has finished in 6th place for the competition.

SSV State Year 7 Girls Soccer

On Thursday 4th September the BHS Year 7 Girls Soccer team qualified for the SSV State Year 7 Girls Soccer Championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre

The Year 7 Girls team drew Pool B alongside Melbourne Girls College (0 goals to 3 goals), Catholic College Wodonga (0 goals to 2 goals) and Bendigo South East College (0 goals to 4 goals). Keilor Downs College, McKinnon Secondary College, Canterbury Girls Secondary College and Lavalla Catholic College made up the Pool A.

The matches probably didn’t go the way the team would have liked but what they lacked in goals scored they made up with enthusiasm and determination!

Head coach Gillian Bennett noted that they were a terrific group of students who were pleasure to coach.

Following in the footsteps of the Senior Boys Netball team the Year 7 Girls team won the Spirit in Sport award for the competition. We have it on good authority that most of the hard work was due to Maddison Kraulins who was making friends from all the opposition teams throughout the day!

The team has finished in 8th place for the competition.

SSV State Year 7 Boys Soccer

On Friday 5th September the BHS Year 7 Boys Soccer team qualified for the SSV State Year 7 Boys Soccer Championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre

The Year 7 Boys team drew Pool B alongside Preston High School (0 goals to 0 goals), Catholic College Wodonga (0 goals to 1 goal1) and Bendigo South East College (3 goals to 2 goals). Maribyrnong College, Dandenong High School, Rowville Secondary College and Lowanna College made up the Pool A.

It was a day of unanswered questions for the Year 7 Boys team finishing with one win, one draw and one loss to finish agonisingly short of qualifying for the Grand Final.

Head coach Jamie Walker wanted to highlight how tremendously well the team had played over the whole competition and if a few near misses hadn’t hit the crossbar the results would have looked completely different! Jamie added that soccer is in safe hands with the group for many years to come.

Ballarat High School would like to thank Jamie Walker from the Western Victoria Football Academy for providing his services to coach the team. Check out the academy website on the link below:

SSV State Senior Girls Soccer

On Tuesday 9th September the BHS Senior Girl Soccer team qualified for the SSV State Senior Girls Soccer Championships at the Darebin International Sports Centre.

Having received a walk through from the Eureka and Greater Western Region competitions they were super keen to play a match together and why not start with the SSV State Championships!

This was also the last of many trips BHS had made to the Darebin International Sports Centre the last 9 days.

The Senior Girls team drew Pool B alongside Castlemaine Secondary College (1 goals to 2 goals), Brunswick Secondary College (4 goals to 0 goals) and Greater Shepparton Secondary College (2 goals to 3 goals). Taylors Lakes Secondary College, McKinnon Secondary College, Doncaster Secondary College and Lavalla Catholic College made up the Pool A.

The team had many close matches which they were in the hunt for the win but unfortunately came home empty in the wins column. The exciting part is that all the students attending will be available for selection next year in the Senior Girls team and will be better for the experience.

The team has finished in 7th place for the competition.
