Living the Charter: It's Everyone's Work

Last week, I was privileged to attend the EREA National Conference, “Living the Charter: It's Everyone's Work” in Melbourne, where I joined Deputy Principals and Identity leaders from Edmund Rice schools across Australia. The conference provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on how our individual roles contribute to the broader mission of Edmund Rice Education Australia and to deepen our understanding of the EREA Charter. 

The conference centred on the belief that living the Charter is not the responsibility of a select few, but the work of every member of our community. Through keynote presentations, Charter sessions, and shared dialogue, we explored how the Charter continues to shape our leadership, our schools, and our commitment to those on the margins. 

A particular highlight was hearing from Fr Frank Brennan, who challenged us to consider how the Church continues to grow through greater inclusion and participation, particularly regarding the role of women. He also reminded us of how far we still have to go in this space. He also encouraged us to reflect on how we move forward in our commitment to reconciliation with First Nations peoples following the defeat of the Voice referendum. His message was a powerful reminder that our call to justice requires courage and persistence, supporting those who are marginalised not only when it is comfortable, but especially when it is not.

Another inspiring keynote came from Professor Donna Cross, who spoke about the rapidly changing world in which young people are growing up. She reminded us of the vital importance of strong relationships and belonging within schools, particularly as students navigate increasingly complex social and global challenges. Her presentation reinforced the need for schools to continue creating environments where every young person feels known, valued and supported. 

These messages resonate strongly with the work we continue to undertake at our College through the implementation of the NSW Anti-Bullying Framework and our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing. By fostering respectful relationships, listening to student voice, and creating a culture of inclusion, we help ensure that every young person can flourish.

The conference was a valuable reminder that the Charter is not simply a document but a living invitation to action. As educators in the Edmund Rice tradition, we are called to walk alongside others with compassion, advocate for justice and create communities where all people experience dignity, belonging and hope.
