Youth Ministry

Feast of Assumption reflection

The year 11 Youth Ministry Class hosted the whole-school Feast of the Assumption Mass. This Mass celebrates the Virgin Mary’s assumption into heaven, body and soul. The celebrant was Fr Jean-Sebastien Gery, assistant priest St Justin’s Wheelers Hill and Good Shepherd, Mulgrave.

I volunteered to read out a prayer and participate in the procession of the gifts. I found reading out the prayer to be very intimidating, as I had never read at a whole-school Mass before, and the Mass was particularly important.

I read the small paragraph easily a hundred times over, and I tripped over my words every time while practicing. By the time we were in the line-up for speaking at the podium I had completely psyched myself out and could feel my heart trying to jump out of my throat, but when I began to read, I didn’t feel as worried anymore. I felt that the Holy Spirit had instilled the strength I needed within me, and I read out the paragraph without stumbling over my words for the first time.

Helping with the procession of gifts was much less intimidating as I didn't need to talk and was just placing the gifts onto the altar. I found the experience to be really rewarding, and I also feel it helped me getting over my fear of reading in front of audiences. I would recommend to someone unsure about helping at Mass at school to go for it!

Year 10 Youth Ministry

The Year 10 Youth Ministry students organised and ran a retreat activity for St Elizabeth's Primary School on 19 August.

It was based on the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church and involved both information about it and how students could be attentive to the voice of God when caring for others and the world. This is as assessed task for the Nazareth students.

Much fun was had in the learning and retreat sections by both schools and we look forward to further events together in the future.

God bless
