Why It's Perfectly Okay If Your Child Doesn’t Know What Career They Want
If your teenager shrugs when asked about their future career, take a deep breath—and let that be okay. In a world that’s changing faster than ever, expecting a 15-year-old to have a crystal-clear vision of their professional destiny is not just unrealistic—it’s unnecessary. The most important thing is to ensure subject choices keep options open and continuous discussions and exploration.
Exploration Builds Resilience
Not knowing what they want to do gives your child room to explore. It encourages curiosity, adaptability, and self-awareness. These are the very traits that employers value most. Instead of pushing for certainty, support their journey of discovery. Let them try coding, volunteering, writing, building, designing—whatever sparks interest. Each experience adds a layer to their understanding of themselves.
What You Can Say Instead
Rather than asking, “What do you want to be?” try:
- “What are you curious about right now?”
- “What kind of problems do you enjoy solving?”
- “What’s something you’ve done that made you feel proud?”
- “Is there a subject you really like doing?”
These questions shift the focus from a fixed destination to a flexible, evolving path.
Skills Over Titles
Encourage your child to build skills—communication, digital literacy, teamwork, creativity. These are transferable across industries and roles. Whether they become a software engineer, a teacher, or an entrepreneur, these foundational skills will serve them well.
Your Support Matters Most
The pressure to “figure it all out” can be overwhelming. Your reassurance that it’s okay to be uncertain is a powerful gift. It tells your child: “You’re not behind. You’re growing. And I’m here for you.”
So next time your child says, “I’m not sure what I want to do,” smile and say, “That’s perfectly fine. Let’s explore together.”

VET Spectacular Shines at Nazareth College: A Celebration of Skills, Passion, and Possibility
Nazareth College recently hosted an inaugural VET Spectacular, a vibrant showcase of Vocational Education and Training (VET) offerings on campus at Nazareth College 2026. The event left Year 9 and 10 students and educators inspired and energised. The event was more than just a display—it was a dynamic celebration of practical learning, career pathways, and student achievement.
The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as VET Dance showcased energetic routines and VET Music students performed their assessments. Students were treated to a variety of hair and beauty treatments.
A range of VET disciplines—including Cookery, Laboratory Skills, Active Volunteering, Music, Dance, Business, Information Technology, Sport Recreation & Aquatics, Salon Assistant and Beauty Services—transformed the auditorium and foyer into a living gallery of skill and innovation.
Year 9s and 10s found out how a VET can complement VCE subjects, be considered a part of an accelerated program, create a smooth transition into VCE Vocational Major and contribute to an ATAR.
The VET Spectacular wasn’t just good—it was exceptional. It brought VET to life in a way that was engaging, empowering, and deeply relevant. Teachers and staff were praised for their dedication and creativity in curating the event, while students walked away with a renewed sense of pride and possibility, with over 83% surveyed stating they had a greater understanding of VET and 50% of students seriously considering VET as a part of their VCE program at Nazareth.
Nazareth College has once again proven that VET in schools is not just a pathway—it’s a launchpad for future leaders, innovators, and skilled professionals.
