STEM Report

Hello and welcome to another exciting term in the STEM room. Term 2 is a great opportunity for students to take advantage of our established routines and settle into a productive learning rhythm. This term, students will look to build on their great start to the year as they explore a variety of topics from the Victorian Schools Science Curriculum. Have a look below to see what each year level is up to...
Prep: This term, Prep students will explore the Physical Science topic titled, 'Sliding and Rolling'. They will investigate the way objects move and discover how factors such as size and shape may influence an object's movement.
Grade 1/2: Students in Grade 1/2 will tackle a topic titled, 'Special in every way' from the Biological Science Curriculum. They will identify external features that make living things unique and explore how the function of these features may help the survival.
Grade 3/4: This term, Grade 3/4 students will explore the Biological Science topic titled, 'Help me, Help you'. They will investigate thebeneficial relationships between different living things and learn about the roles different organisms have in an ecosystem.
Grade 5/6: Students in Grade 5/6 will explore the fascinating world of electricity in their topic titled, 'Light it up'. They will identify the components in an electrical circuit and learn how these components play a role in the function of a circuit.
STEM Abilities Group
Term 2 sees the conclusion of the Grade 3/4 STEM abilities group for Semester 1. I have loved working with such an enthusiastic bunch of students as they worked their way through series of robot coding challenges. The group used the LEGO EV3 platform to learn how commands can be chained together to create coded sequences and control specific robotic functions. Drawing on their mathematical understanding of rotation, direction and measurement, students guided their robots through various obstacles and pathways. See some of the action in the photos below.
