English

This term, students in Grade 1 and 2 will continue developing their reading comprehension strategies, with a focus on summarising and questioning. They will practise these skills through listening to rich literature, guided reading, and independent reading, strengthening their ability to understand, retell, and think deeply about texts.

In writing, students will learn how to create procedural texts, exploring the purpose, structure, and language features of this text type. Through language experience activities, students will draw on shared class experiences to plan, sequence, and write clear, step‑by‑step procedures using appropriate language features.

Students will also continue to participate in the UFLI Phonics Program that supports the development of phonemic awareness, decoding, and spelling. They will practise identifying sounds, blending and segmenting words, and applying spelling patterns to support both reading and writing.

Maths

In mathematics, students will build their understanding of addition and subtraction by exploring a range of strategies, including count back, count on, the split strategy, using a number line, and applying the inverse relationship between operations. These skills will be connected to real‑life contexts such as adding small amounts of money, combining quantities, and solving everyday number problems.

Across all learning areas, students will continue to work towards their individual learning goals, using feedback, reflection, and targeted practice to build confidence, independence,

and a strong sense of ownership over their learning.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students will continue to explore an inquiry into the many factors that affect their health and wellbeing. Students will develop an understanding that there are a range of things we need to keep our bodies and minds healthy, including good nutrition, regular sleep, rest, exercise, personal hygiene, and positive mental health practices. Through hands‑on activities, discussions, and reflections, students will investigate how daily choices and habits contribute to their overall wellbeing and how they can take responsibility for looking after themselves.

SEL

This term, students will learn about their feelings and how to manage them. They will talk about how they feel when they lose or are left out of a game and learn fair ways to choose who goes first. Students will explore calming and cheering‑up strategies and when to use them. They will identify things that make them feel worried, scared, or angry and practise ways to manage these emotions safely. Students will also learn what helps a team work well together and how teamwork can solve problems. Finally, they will think of different ways to solve problems and consider the good and bad outcomes of the choices they make.
