Kind Words, A Flourishing Community

At St Pius X College, our community is strengthened not only by our shared values and mission but also by the way we speak to and about one another. Words have the power to welcome, to encourage, and to shape the culture of a community. This was evident throughout our recent Open Day as staff and students engaged with visiting families.

One of the most striking aspects of the day was the way our students engaged with the many families who visited the College. Whether leading tours, answering questions, or offering a simple greeting, our students communicated with confidence, warmth, kindness and authenticity. They spoke proudly about their learning, their teachers, and the many opportunities available to them at St Pius X.

Several visitors commented on the genuine and thoughtful conversations they had with our students. One parent commented on a conversation with a student who spoke with pride about his involvement in sport and music, and how these opportunities had helped him grow in confidence. Another visitor noted how several students went out of their way to greet families as they arrived, offering directions and a friendly welcome. These were just two of many interactions throughout the day that reflected the welcoming spirit of our students.

These small but meaningful exchanges highlight the power of words. A kind welcome, an enthusiastic explanation, or a thoughtful response to a question can leave a lasting impression. They reflect the sense of belonging that exists within our College and the respect our students show to others.

Importantly, this spirit is not limited to Open Day. Throughout the year, visitors regularly comment on the courteous and respectful way our students interact with those around them. A greeting in the corridor, a word of thanks to a teacher, or a willingness to assist a visitor all contribute to the positive culture that characterises life at St Pius X College.

Open Day was not simply an opportunity to showcase our facilities or programs; it was an opportunity for families to experience the character of our community through the words and actions of our students. We thank our students for being such outstanding ambassadors for the College and for the pride with which they represent St Pius X. We also acknowledge our staff, whose support and encouragement continue to nurture a culture where respect, kindness, and genuine connection flourish.

Jesus, You spoke to people in ways that changed their lives.

You spoke with words of gentleness: ‘Come to me all who are tired

from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.’

(Matthew 11:28)

You spoke words of reassurance: ‘Courage my daughter! Your faith

has made you well.’ (Luke 8:48)

You spoke words of challenge,

grounded in compassion: ‘Let the one among you who is without sin

be the first to cast a stone.’ (John 8:7)

May our homes and our classrooms be places where kind words are spoken often,

and where others are lifted up through what we say.

Amen.
