Health Information – Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

The Victorian Chief Health Officer has issued a public health alert following the detection of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza (bird flu) in a wild bird in Victoria.

The current risk to the Victorian community remains low, and there have been no locally acquired human cases reported in Australia.

Families are reminded to:

• Avoid touching sick or dead birds or other animals.
• Report multiple sick or dead birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

• Seek medical advice if flu-like symptoms develop after contact with sick or dead birds.

   

While there is no specific vaccine for bird flu, seasonal influenza vaccination is recommended for people who work closely with birds and other animals.
