John XXIII Rowing Club

Dear Rowing Families

Our John XXIII regatta last weekend was a tremendous success, raising almost $12,000, which is a record! Thank you to all John XXIII Rowing parents and the broader JTC community for your generous donations, the amazing raffle, tasty homemade goods, and dedicated volunteer support in the lead-up to and on the day.

This week sees our boys’ squad racing in their first All Schools regatta on Sunday 14 June, preceded by the girls’ penultimate IGSSA regatta on Saturday, 13 June. Some of our Year 8s are also racing in their first-ever races on Sunday. We hope they enjoy the experience and have a great time. Please see the STACK App for more details on race times.

IGSSA Regatta

The penultimate IGGSA regatta on Saturday will feature a few different crews due to Music Camp. Crews will still work on their race plans, and switching combinations can help rowers be more aware of their technique, so we’ll take this as an opportunity.

All Schools Regatta

Our boys’ squad take to the water on Sunday for their first regatta this year. After their long preparation, they are all raring to go, and we can’t wait to see them on the water. It is a long day, so please ensure rowers have food that will sustain them through the day. Food will be available for purchase, but please bring some of your own supplies. It is an expectation that rowers will be unloading at Canning Bridge after the regatta. A bus departs from school at 6am on Sunday and returns to Canning Bridge after the regatta, and will be ready for pickup at approximately 4:30pm. A text will be sent when we get back to the boatshed with our expected finish time. Please speak to your coach if you need to leave early. Further details on the regatta have been posted on the STACK App.

Other news

The IGSSA Head of the River is on Saturday 20 June, and the boys’ squad have the opportunity, depending on availability and numbers, to race in the long distance Guildford to Garrett Road on Sunday 21 June.

Training days

Due to the IGSSA regatta calendar and boat loading, our calendar is mixed up for the Year 9s and 10s and is no longer on alternate weeks for the boys and girls. Please refer to the calendar on STACK in the ‘Documents’ section for your Friday training days.

With all that activity, please stay as healthy as possible. Get as much sleep as possible, stay hydrated, eat well and keep up the hand hygiene.

Remember, if you can’t make a session, please email Claire.woolfitt@johnxxiii.edu.au, or jimmy.oregan@johnxxiii.edu.au for the Girls Squad or lauren.strong@johnxxiii.edu.au for the Boys Squad.

Year 8 Learn to Row

The Year 8 Learn to Row students are seeing great progress out on the water. Rowers are back in quad sculls in preparation for their race, learning to put their technique into practice and follow the others in the boat.

Students are very receptive to feedback and are getting up and down the course with improved technique and crews are able to now row together.

All Schools #2 Regatta Sign-up is now live, and please reply by Thursday, 18 June, with your availability.

Mixed races are early at 8:30am, girls' quad around 1pm, and boys' quad around 2:30pm if you have time limitations.

Please contact me at: claire.woolfitt@johnxxiii.edu.au if you have any queries.

Year 8’s row in their PE uniform, and there is no need for them to purchase any rowing uniform.

The STACK group is up and running, and the student and the parent who registered them will have received an email from STACK.

Uniforms

The new zootsuit is now in stock at the Uniform Shop. There is also a training top that can be worn under the zootsuit, and a ¼-zip fleece. The only compulsory item is the Zootsuit for racing at regattas.  There is a stock of the old zootsuits that can be worn for training.

Stack Team App

This App is one of our main avenues for communication with rowers and their parents. Please download the ‘Stack Team App’ on your phone, as this is the central place for training schedules, training updates, access to the rowing handbook, to name a few. It is important that all rowers and parents have access.

To get this app please go to the App Store or Google Play and download the Stack Team App onto your mobile device, then follow these simple steps:

  • Sign-up to Stack Team App. You’ll be sent an email to confirm your registration.
  • Log-in and search for JTCRC, then request to become a member.

Buses

  • Pick up: 5:05am at College Bus shelter
  • Return: 7:30am from Boatshed
