Compass as a Communication Tool

Dear Parents and Carers,

At SCSC, our community gives us great feedback on our consistent strong communication and transparency with families so that you can stay informed about your child’s learning journey, achievements, and daily experiences at school.

While Compass will send email notifications when updates are posted for both a group of students and the individual, logging directly into Compass will provide you with full details and additional context. Often the email will not include all details, but rather prompt you to check the app. By checking the Compass app you can see a range of information, including (but not limited to):

Positive postcards celebrating student success and effort
Learning task/assessment results
Invitations to after school and lunchtime support sessions for catching up on learning and which subject/task this is for
Notifications regarding detentions (for late to class, out of uniform and other)
Attendance (including late to class)
Events for students such as incursions

Regularly checking Compass helps ensure that families remain informed with the details and able to support their child’s progress and wellbeing at SCSC. We ask that you please check Compass to gain context and information about a notification before reaching out to one of our team members. Road rules for e-bike riders

On shared public roads and paths, e-bikes must follow the same road rules as a bicycle.

Make sure you understand the rules before going out on your e-bike. This is to keep you, other riders, pedestrians and drivers safe on the roads.

Rider rules include:

always wear a properly fitted helmet
keep to the left and give way to pedestrians on paths
do not ride across a pedestrian crossing, unless there is a bicycle lane, or a green bicycle light
have at least one working brake
have a bell, horn or other warning device
people 13 years and older cannot ride on the footpath, unless accompanying someone younger than 13.

You can be fined for breaking the road rules.

E-bike rider safety

Take care when riding your e-bike on shared roads and footpaths. Remember to:

slow down and use your bell when passing pedestrians
use your headlights during low light, for example at night, in bad weather, and in poorly lit areas
ride on the correct side of the road, with the flow of traffic
ensure your tyres remain properly inflated
make eye contact with drivers and other road users, especially at intersections.

Our school collects and uses student and parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy and the Schools’ Privacy Collection Notice.

Our Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Policy, describes how we collect and use photographs, video and recordings of students. The policy also explains when parent consent is required and how it can be provided and withdrawn.

We ask parents to also review the guidance we provide on how we use Google Workspace for Education safely at the school and what parents can do to further protect their child’s information. If after reviewing the guidance, you have any questions or concerns regarding your child using Google Workspace for Education, please contact the school.

Student Lost Property

To assist staff with returning items that may have been left behind in class, we strongly advise families to ensure the student name has been written on the tag so we may return them to the rightful owner.

Any items that are found without a name will be kept for 2 weeks and if unclaimed, will then be donated.

Sick Bay

If a student is feeling unwell, to keep in line with the Department of Education & Training's Mobile Phone Policy, students are required to go to the Administration Office where a trained First Aid Officer will provide assistance and call parents/guardians if they are too unwell to remain at school and need to go home.

Please note, that the school will only call parents/guardians in regards to an unwell child. The school will never send a text message to advise that their child is unwell and requires collection.

Phone Payments in the Canteen

A reminder that in accordance with the Department’s Mobile Phones Policy issued by the Minister for Education, personal mobile phones must not be used at Surf Coast Secondary College during school hours, including lunchtime and recess, unless an exception has been granted. Where a student has been granted an exception, the student must use their mobile phone for the purpose for which the exception was granted, and in a safe, ethical, and responsible manner.

This means that no student is to use their mobile phone to make a payment in the Canteen.

Students who use their personal mobile phones inappropriately at Surf Coast Secondary College may be issued with consequences consistent with our school’s existing student engagement polices. At Surf Coast Secondary College inappropriate use of mobile phones is any use during school hours including recess and lunch time.

Insurance Reminder

Schools and parents/carers are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance for students.

Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs.

Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

Personal Property Reminder

The Department of Education does not have insurance for personal property of staff, students, and visitors. Surf Coast Secondary College and the Department of Education do not take responsibility for items of personal property that are lost, stolen or damaged at school or during school activities.

Damage to personal property brought to school is the responsibility of the owner of that property. This includes motor vehicles.

Surf Coast Secondary College encourages staff and students not to bring items of value to school, or to obtain appropriate insurance for such items.
