Learning at St Columbas

We are thrilled to share the wonderful news following our recent International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Evaluation. The official report has arrived and it offers a glowing celebration of our school identity as a place "Where Innovation Meets Heart," combining forward-thinking minds with genuine compassion, care and a deep sense of belonging. The IB evaluation team commended St Columba’s across all areas, recognising that our implementation shows exceptional alignment with IB standards and practices. Above all, the report highlighted the vibrant culture of care, respect, and inquiry that defines our community.

An IB evaluation reflects the effort, belief and dedication of an entire school community. We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible teaching staff and leadership team for their tireless work, collaboration and pedagogical expertise. The evaluators praised our staff for creating interactive learning environments where every student is known, valued and supported to flourish. A huge thank you also goes to our parent group, the School Advisory Council (SAC), and our local community partners for your continuous support, feedback and active engagement. From contributing to school governance to supporting our service projects, your partnership is vital to our success. Most of all, we are so proud of our curious, kind, and passionate learners who were observed collaborating with empathy, reflecting on the IB Learner Profile, taking risks in their learning, and making positive contributions both locally and globally.

The evaluation report praised many standout strengths across our school community. A key highlight was our successful balance of explicit teaching practices alongside the student-centred, inquiry-based IB PYP philosophy. From play in Prep to explicit foundational skill-building and the Year 6 Exhibition, our classrooms invite students to question, explore and master their learning. Evaluators also noted our values in action through partnerships with the Sacred Heart Mission, B Kinder Day and Eco Warriors, where students put empathy and social responsibility into real-world action. Furthermore, the intentional design of spaces like our library, STEAM room and Visual Arts Studio was highlighted for supporting collaboration, while our wellbeing initiatives, including buddy programs, St Columba's Kids and lunchtime clubs, were celebrated for creating a supportive environment for all.

Evaluation is an ongoing reflective process that helps us continually grow and elevate our learning environment. Looking ahead, we are excited to build on this momentum by focusing on several key next steps. We will be working to amplify student voice and agency, giving students more ways to shape their learning goals, initiate action and contribute directly to school life. We also plan to deepen our community and parent connections by providing more opportunities for families to glimpse inside classroom learning, engage with units of inquiry and celebrate student progress together. Additionally, we look forward to expanding enrichment activities in areas like creative arts, sport and clubs, while enhancing our physical learning environments based on student feedback.
