Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Mandarin (Prep)

In recent weeks, the Prep students have learnt family words such as 妈妈 (māma) mum, 爸爸 (bàba) dad, 哥哥 (gēge) older brother and 姐姐 (jiějie) older sister. They have also learnt how to introduce their family members using 这是 (zhè shì), meaning “this is”. Next week, they will learn 爷爷 (yéye) grandpa and 奶奶 (nǎinai) grandma. They will also explore places and people in the community, with a focus on their school community, including 老师 (lǎoshī) teacher, 朋友 (péngyou) friend and 学校 (xuéxiào) school.

Physical Education (Years 1 and 2)

In PE this week, Grades 1 and 2 continued with rugby. This week, we focused on passing a rugby ball to a partner. Students practiced throwing the ball across their body using the phrase 'hip, dig, pass'. Children first practiced with their partner before we had a competition to see how many passes they could make in three minutes. After, we practiced passing the ball whilst moving around the gym. To finish the lesson, children played a fun game where they passed the ball with their partner across the gym and scored a try once reaching the try line.

Music (Years 3 and 4)

In the Grade 3 and 4, our theme this term is Electronic Music. 

Students have been learning about how electronic music is made, specifically the commonly used song writing techniques for melodies such as call and response and motifs. We have also looked at the role chords, basslines and drum patterns play in the genre.

Students have been composing music on Chrome Music Lab – Song Maker. They have been following detailed guidelines for constructing original pieces of music and presenting the pieces to their classmates.

Visual Art (Year 5 and 6)

The Year 5 and 6 students were excited to begin our Clay unit this week! In our first lesson, we explored a range of clay tools and experimented with how each one can be used to create different textures, shapes and details. Students had the opportunity to use wire cutters, modelling tools, metal and wooden ribs, wire loop tools and more. Dedicating an entire lesson to experimenting with these tools will give students a strong foundation as they begin designing and creating their own clay sculptures in the coming weeks. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to try new techniques. Fantastic work, everyone!
