Class Celebrations

Prep

The Preps have loved our new Ready for Life lessons! We have been working in teams to use a range of resources to build mini worlds and alter them to protect our little 'people' from different weather events. This week, we focussed on the roles of a Checker, Builder, Rescuer and Supplier in our community. Students built a world that was then destroyed by a flood and used great teamwork skills to assign roles and make changes that made the environment safer. We have been impressed with the engagement during these sessions - it is always a fun time of the week!

Year 1

This week, students began our new Ready for Life lessons. These sessions focus on developing practical skills that help students become more independent such as baking, using scissors safely and learning how to tie knots.

In our first lesson, students made dough, giving them the opportunity to follow instructions, measure ingredients and strengthen the fine motor skills needed for everyday tasks. In our next lesson, we moved on to paper control where students practised carefully tearing paper. We explored the difference between fast, messy tearing and slow, controlled tearing and discussed why taking our time helps us achieve the best result. These skills will be put into practice as students create their own books in an upcoming lesson! 

Year 2

Our Year 2 students embarked on an excursion to TwistEd Science as part of our Science Unit: Flash! Bang! with a focus on light and sound. Students participated in a workshop where they explored the colours within white light, sound sources and the way light and sound move. They had time to be scientists and explore many different stations. These ranged from bubbles, rocket launching, pipe connections and building. Check out some of our mini scientists below.

Year 3

Our Year 3 students have been learning about Chance in Maths. They have explored the vocabulary of certain, possible, uncertain, impossible, likely and unlikely when deciding on the chance of an event occurring. They have also explored chance experiments where they needed to identify all the possible outcomes, make their predictions, complete the experiment to find the actual result and then compare their expected result with the actual result. In one of the sessions, the whole cohort came together to complete a set of 3 chance experiments. This included a spinner, counter and dice experiment. Check out Seesaw to find out their results!

Year 4

Year 4 students have been enjoying our Material World Science unit! They have been learning about different materials and exploring their properties.

Over the last couple of weeks, students have started working on their exciting Egg Protection Challenge. They started by planning their designs independently, before collaborating with a buddy to refine their ideas. Together, they consider the purpose of their design, the properties needed for protection, and which materials would be most effective.

This week, students started building their prototypes, and it has been wonderful to see their creativity and teamwork in action. We are looking forward to seeing how their designs turn out!

Year 5

Year 5 students have been greatly enjoying our Term 3 Science unit, It's Electric. Throughout the unit students have explored electrical circuits and developed their programming skills using our new Micro:bit devices. They have used their learning to build a range of simple circuits, including with switches and light bulbs. They have learnt how to identify and troubleshoot faults such as the lightbulb not turning on and practised troubleshooting their own circuit. Students have also had lots of fun using the Micro:bit devices to design and program their own interactive name tags and "night lights". Students programmed them the Micro:bits to follow the if... then... rule to only turn on at certain times such as when they don't sense light.

Year 6

Year 6 students have enthusiastically launched into our new Science unit, Bright Ideas, exploring the properties of light. They have been learning to code, using micro:bit software, to investigate how light can be transmitted and detected. 

It has been fantastic to see how quickly students have learnt to write code and successfully download their programs onto their micro:bits. Their problem-solving skills and perseverance have been on full display, and we are excited to continue building and testing our light communication devices over the coming weeks.
