News from our Classrooms - Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and Year 6 Electives

This term we have been doing electives with Mrs Meseha. We were doing Outdoor Education. The first activity was making bush huts which we made and planned for two sessions. In the first session we watched a video about the different types of bush huts. Then in groups of five or six we drew a diagram of how we wanted our hut to look. The supplies we had were a rope, a tarp and sticks. Then the week after we made our huts. Some groups made a tp, leant against the stairs or walls or were free standing. Once we had finished building we did a rain and weight test. We put a wooden cube inside the hut and if it got wet then it failed the rain test. After that we put a small weight on top to see if our hut could hold it without breaking. It was a hard challenge. For our second activity we read a book about the Svalbard Global Seed vault. Then we planted native seeds that Mrs Meseha collected last year. We planted wattle and native indigo. We were very happy to realise that they have started growing.
