Silent Strength

In Term 2, students in Years 7 and 8 Visual Arts embarked on hand building clay projects using ceramics as a medium for artmaking. Studying the cultural use of ceramics over time, students incorporated an element of storytelling into a 3D ceramic sculpture. Harrison’s artwork is an outstanding example of handling sculptural form and capturing the intricacies that make storytelling so powerful, with every detail contributing to an evocative narrative.

Harry Bougas – Year 7 – Artist Statement 

'My artwork is a sculpture of a panther. I chose a panther because they are very strong, confident and have a lot of power. I made it out of clay, which I shaped by hand. I used a variety of tools to make the sculpture look more realistic. After the sculpture was completed, it was put in the kiln and then glazed. I hope that people enjoy looking at my artwork and notice the amount of detail and time that went into making it.'

Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader program has been very successful, with numerous students in Years 5 and 7 already achieving their set reading target over Terms 2 and 3. Students who have achieved their target will be presented with Accelerated Reader Certificates at the beginning of next term.

We are currently in Week 6 of the term, with the AR program finishing at the end of Week 10. Students who have not yet reached their reading target still have time to work towards and achieve their goal.

Celebrate the Poetry of Francis Webb: this Saturday

We warmly invite you to a celebration of the life and poetry of St Pius X College alumnus, Francis Webb (1925–1973), one of Australia’s greatest poets.

This year, we are proudly represented by Dario Leotto (Year 7), who will read one of Webb’s poems alongside a student from Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham - a fitting tribute, as Webb attended both schools.

The event will be hosted by Dr Toby Davidson (Macquarie University), poet, author, and editor of Francis Webb: Collected Poems. He will be joined by Dr Michael Griffith, Webb’s biographer, along with poet-readers who will read and reflect on their chosen poem.

If you’re discovering Webb for the first time, this is an unique opportunity to experience Webb’s poetry and support our student reader, Dario.

SPX Science Week

Science Week

SPX Science Week ran from Monday to Wednesday at lunchtime and was again very successful. Activities this year included: making a cress head; looking at seed pods and seeds under the microscope along with a Kahoot; making seed bombs and a Jar Guessing competition.

Lucky door prizes and gifts were awarded to students who attended each day.

Lolly Jar Guessing Competition Winner

Congratulations also to Hugo Hart (Yr 12) for being the winner of the Lolly Jar Guessing Competition for SPX Science Week.

There were 225 lollies in the jar and Hugo guessed 226. Hugo wins the 225 lollies from the jar.

Education Perfect International Science Championships

Last week, our Year 7 to 10 students took part in the Education Perfect International Science Championships.

This competition ran across the week and encouraged students to engage deeply with Science content on the Education Perfect platform… and some of our students achieved outstanding results.

Out of 1,103 schools worldwide that participated in the competition, St Pius X placed 11th internationally. We also finished 7th in Australia, 5th in New South Wales, and, impressively, 1st in our local competition against Joeys, Knox, Barker, Loreto, and Ravenswood.

Altogether, our students answered more than 56,000 questions, earned over 33,000 points, and achieved an excellent set of awards: 3 Emerald awards, 1 Gold award, 1 Silver award, and 6 Credit awards.

Congratulations to the following award recipients, who were awarded their certificates at assembly this week.
