Keith Payne VC AM Encounter

The Year 11 History Class was deeply honoured to be invited to hear Keith Payne VC AM speak at the Vietnam Veterans Walk on Wednesday, March the 11th. Keith Payne is Australia’s last living Victoria Cross recipient from the Vietnam War, and it was his courage, leadership and dedication to saving his mates during combat in 1969 that earned him this honour. The Victoria Cross is Australia’s highest military honour, awarded to those who display incredible bravery and valour while in the presence of the enemy.

Also present were Owen and Peter Thomas, members of the Gidja people from the Warmun community and representatives of Norforce, an infantry regiment operating throughout North-Western Australia. They were able to share their experiences of protecting Australia’s northern boarders and their time spent working with and aiding in the rehabilitation of Keith Payne, offering a unique perspective on Australian military service.

Keith Payne’s story will help our Year 11 History Class to approach our studies of the Vietnam War with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the hardships faced by our soldiers in times of conflict. We are truly grateful for his time and generosity in supporting our studies and providing us with a rare insight into the experiences of Vietnam Veterans.
