Kitchen Garden

Our Kitchen Garden is really taking off now that Spring is here and after the beautiful rain that we had in the holidays. The trays of seeds from the Diggers Club that we planted before the holidays have all germinated and sprouted, although some are still too small to plant out into the garden yet, so the students have been making sure they get watered in the garden shed.

Years 3-5 worked hard today, filling up the two new raised beds, bottling worm juice, planting cucumbers and beetroot, putting seedlings into our newspaper pots, and weeding the orchard.

We also learnt a bit about food waste, and the incredible amount of good food and produce that goes to waste in Australia. We will be learning more about what we can all do to help avoid this terrible waste.

Years F-2s had their session in the kitchen. This week is International Food Week, so I thought it was appropriate that we made an international dish. We used potatoes and herbs from the garden to make Bolani Katchalu, which is basically a potato-filled pastry from Afghanistan. The children had the experience of rolling out and shaping their own circle of pastry and putting the filling in the centre before we fried them.  Most of the students tried them and many really enjoyed them.
