Years 3 - 5

We have settled well back into Term 4, hitting the ground running! We began the term by sharing and reflecting on our exciting holiday adventures and experiences before revisiting our classroom routines, expectations and RED GUM values, setting ourselves up for a fantastic final term!
In English, we have blasted off into the fascinating world of space exploration! Through our first class text, Moonwalkers by Mark Greenwood, students have been learning about the historic first Moon landing in 1969. Students mapped out the incredible journey of Apollo 11, sequencing the key events through creative comic strips. They then became researchers, investigating the Apollo 11 mission in greater detail and uncovering some fascinating facts! Did you know that one astronaut missed out on walking on the Moon because he had to remain in the command module orbiting above? Or that Buzz Aldrin reportedly used a pen to activate a broken switch in the lunar module, helping the astronauts return safely? Students then stepped into the shoes of television journalists, creating their very own breaking news broadcasts to report on the historic Moon landing and share their newfound knowledge. Their creativity truly shone through, with some students going above and beyond to set the scene, bringing their broadcasts to life with live crosses to fellow reporters and interviews! Students have been absolutely enthralled by the wonders of space, from astronauts and rockets to planets and the incredible achievements of space exploration!
In Art, we have been busy creating some beautiful pieces for the upcoming Fleece and Flower Show. Students have been exploring new artistic techniques, including collage and printing, to create colourful floral masterpieces. We experimented with 'tufting' tissue paper to create textured cherry blossom trees, before turning our attention to the skilful art of printing. Using a variety of everyday materials, including cardboard, forks, corks, cotton buds and cotton filters, students have discovered how different shapes and textures can be used to print flowers and foliage. They have carefully layered their prints to create beautiful floral arrangements, demonstrating wonderful creativity, patience and attention to detail. We cannot wait to see their finished masterpieces on display at the show!
