The current NICE Teachers Journal was dedicated to the importance of creativity and imagination in the growth, development and flourishing of our students and indeed, all God’s children. The Arts team are all working passionately on a range of opportunities for our students to thrive, and it is always exciting and uplifting when we see our students live out their God-given freedom for the enjoyment of our community.

Production for 2027

You may have noticed over the last few years across the North West Coast, there is a growing number of Productions that you can enjoy. As a result, the Leven Theatre in Ulverstone has become very booked up and our production for next year must move from its normal time slot of August to the earlier time of June. This creates a tight timeline, which has influenced our choice of show to ensure we can still stage a production while delivering a great performance.  We are now waiting on final approval from the Licensing Authority so we can receive all the resources and begin auditions to get our rehearsals running early Term 4. If there are any parents who would like to help in any way, we would love to hear from you.

Primary Music- Mrs Haberle

Devonport Eisteddfod Week 7 - Thursday 10 & Friday 11 September.  We have 5 Choirs entered into the Eisteddfod over these two days: Years 1/2 Choir, 3/4 Choir, 5/6 Choir, Year 6 Vocal Ensemble & Years 3-6 Choir.

Musical Showcase Week 9 - Thursday 24 September - this is our big Primary Music event for the year.  We have two concerts - one at 1.40pm for invited guests from Aged Care Centres along the NW Coast, and one at 6.00pm for families and friends.

Australian Girls Choir visit - Friday 25 September - I will be taking our Years 3-6 Choir and some of our Year 7/8 Festival of Voices students along to Geneva Christian College to workshop with the Australian Girls Choir.  This is a wonderful opportunity to work with some of the best choristers and choral conductors in our country.

Marimba Magic - Friday 23 October - a combined schools event; this year to be held in the MP Hall at Ulverstone campus with rehearsals during the afternoon, culminating in a family concert at 6.30pm.

High School Music - Mr Legg

All students have been exploring, attempting, failing and succeeding at song-writing.  It is a daunting task and it is challenging from social, confidence and identity perspectives.  It requires a lot of bravery which students are working through, some going well, others still yet to take the risk, but they are making small steps. 

Other students are writing stories, testimonies, sermons/messages as a springboard for writing lyrics. Discerning appropriate and relevant stories within a biblical worldview is a common discussion point, especially for the death metal bands... watch out for a new genre of Christian death ...(life?)...metal. 

Two of our successful contemporary bands are also going to Battle of the Bands at the Burnie Show. They can be viewed from 11.00am to 12.30pm on Saturday 3 October. They are currently busy finalising arrangements/cover songs and their compositions, which will be launched for the first time at the show!  The two bands are ‘Skurg’ and ‘Hangar Queen’.

Parents and members of our school community are encouraged to keep an eye out for our end of year Celebration Service, which will provide an opportunity to see and hear all the work students have been creating. 

Visual Art - Mr Wynne

In late July until sometime in October, Leighland has around 15 Years 7 and 8 student clay artworks on display at Hive in Ulverstone. They can be found in the display cases on the ground floor opposite the stairs, and they look very impressive in this public space where a lot of people from the community can enjoy them. Each work is the student’s response to the theme of ‘Voyage’ represented by a human form, with additional decorative elements to communicate each unique perspective on the theme. 

Other work in clay has been completed in the form of clay tiles that will be installed on our mural wall which will complete the series of 3 panels.  We are looking at the next art project for the school in the form of a painted mural that will hopefully begin and be completed in Term 4.
