World Bee Day! Wed, May 20th 🐝🐝🐝
This week was all about the wonderful powers of bees and their importance to the world! Almost all of our fruits, vegetables and grain crops rely on bees for production of food and seeds. As the bees travel from flower to flower gathering pollen, they spread it from flower to flower, thereby fertilising the flowers so that it then forms the fruit or vegetables that we all love to eat. Without bees to pollinate the flowers, we would have a world wide food shortage!
The other great thing that bees do for us is to produce honey, so this week both classes cooked with honey. Grades 3-5 used broccoli, peas, beans, capsicum, onion and basil from the garden, along with chicken fillets to make a honey and soy stir fry…it was absolutely delicious!
We received a great kit about bees and honey from Beetanicals, so the students also got to taste test honey samples collected from different landscapes…. Mountain, River or Bush. My favourite was the mountain honey.🍯
Year F-2 learnt lots about bees and how they communicate to other bees about where the best food supply is. Get your child to show you the Bee Waggle Dance!! Then this class made Honey Joys, which were popular with everyone.
Did you know that there are 20,000 different types of bees in the world and about 1,600 different types of bees in Australia! It is very important to have a range of different types of bees, as different ones do the main pollinating of various different plants.
Beetanicals also kindly gave us packets of seeds for bee friendly plants. We will plant some in our school garden, but each child also took some home to plant in their own gardens. In the afternoon I spotted some busy pollinators at work in our kitchen garden- bees and little blue butterflies.
Remember to bee happy, bee kind and bee friendly to bees, otherwise we will all bee in trouble!🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🌺🪻🌾🌸🌼🌻🐝🐝🐝
I am handing over to Miss P for the next few weeks, and there are lots of fun activities planned, so I’ll look forward to following the progress.
