R U OK? Day 2026: A Conversation Can Make a Difference

Last Friday, students across Years 5–12 marked R U OK? Day through the 2026 focus “Real Mates Show Up” and the campaign invitation to “Wear Something Worth Talking About.” Pastoral Care lessons encouraged students to recognise that a simple question can make a big difference. They reflected on times when reaching out can be difficult, identified someone they could check in with, and practised the four steps of a meaningful conversation: Ask R U OK?, Listen, Encourage Action and Check In.

Through realistic scenarios, media stories and a “Real Mates Commitment Wall”, students explored how noticing changes, listening without judgement and helping a friend seek support can strengthen trust and connection. Wellbeing Prefect, Michael B assembly presentations reinforced this message, reminding us that people may carry challenges hidden beneath the surface and that we do not need perfect words or all the answers to help.

The colourful fun socks initiative put these ideas into action: the socks sparked curiosity, laughter and conversation, while visually reinforcing that every conversation matters and together we can start conversations that change lives. The challenge now is to carry this spirit beyond one day—to be kind, reach out, stay connected and become, in Michael’s words, “someone worth talking to.”
