📚 Celebrating Book Week in Auslan! 🤟

Senior School students have been celebrating Book Week in Auslan by exploring familiar stories presented in Auslan by Deaf signers.

Grade 3 and 4 students watched The Colour Monster and put their knowledge of feelings and colour signs into action. They helped separate the Colour Monster’s different feelings, identifying and signing the emotions and colours represented throughout the story.

Grade 5 students watched The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Auslan and have begun retelling – or “re-signing” – this familiar story with a partner. Students are preparing their bilingual stories to share with our Junior School students. They have done an impressive job of creating their stories in both English and Auslan, while experimenting with how expression, facial expressions and body movements can be used to convey meaning and bring a story to life.

Grade 6 students have been learning all things ‘Time’ in Auslan! They have been creating their own Auslan-style clocks and using Auslan to share information about when different activities happen throughout their daily routines. Students have been developing their understanding of Auslan grammar while practising time signs and describing their routines.

It has been wonderful to see students using their Auslan knowledge creatively and confidently to tell, retell and share stories.
