Welcome back to Term 2! We have already had a busy and exciting first two weeks back at school. Students have jumped straight into the term with wonderful energy, enjoying special events such as the colourful and fun-filled Colour Fun Run, as well as our school athletics events. It has been fantastic to see so much enthusiasm, participation, and school spirit as we begin another great term of learning together.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring statistics and probability. Students have been collecting data through surveys, and class investigations, then organising this information to create and interpret different types of graphs, such as picture graphs, bar graphs, and tally charts. They have been learning how to read graphs carefully to compare results, answer questions, and identify patterns or trends in data. In probability, students have been investigating chance by exploring everyday events and describing them using terms such as certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible. Through hands-on activities and discussions, they have been developing their understanding of how probability helps us predict outcomes and make sense of chance in the world around us.

In Writing, students have been focusing on creating information reports about countries. We explored how authors organise factual writing using clear sections, headings, and subheadings to present information clearly. As a class, we examined examples of information reports and discussed how writers use topic sentences and carefully chosen facts to teach readers about different places. Students have also been learning to paraphrase by researching information and rewriting it in their own words. They then began planning and writing their own country reports, including facts about location, landmarks, animals, culture, and environment.

In Reading, we have been focusing on understanding and navigating non-fiction texts to help students locate and use information more effectively. Students have been exploring important text features such as contents pages, indexes, headings, subheadings, captions, and glossaries, learning how each feature helps readers find specific information quickly. We have been practising skimming to get a general idea of a text and scanning to locate key words, facts, and important details efficiently. Through guided activities, students have used contents pages and indexes to search for topics and answer questions, building their confidence in researching and reading for information.
