Welcome back to school everyone. We hope you had a wonderful time on the holidays with your beautiful children.

During our first week in Literacy we revised all letters of the alphabet and their most common sounds. We revised blending these sounds and making words to read and write. We continued working on making sentences verbally to ensure they make sense and writing these sentences with uppercase letters to begin, spaces between words and ending punctuation. We revised the heart words that have been sent home. We learnt about Earth Day and how to help our planet by turning off lights and powerpoints that are not needed, turning off taps while brushing our teeth, having quick showers to conserve water and reducing , reusing and recycling plus planting trees. We learnt about ANZAC Day; a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand commemorating the 1915 Gallipoli landing. We learnt that it honors the "ANZAC spirit"—courage, mateship, and sacrifice—of all armed forces personnel who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

During the second week of Term Two we moved on to learning about double letters. We learnt to read and write words such as dull, fuss, puff, buzz, butter and ladder. We have been learning new heart words and these will be sent home after we learn them at school for you to help your child remember these words which can not be worked out by giving most common sounds to match letters. We also learnt about Environmental print. We walked around our school and found signs, number plates, hopscotch and posters, teaching students we read a lot more than books.

We loved the colour fun run very much. Thank you to Parents and Friends for organising such a terrific fund raiser. We hope to raise enough money for new technology to use in classrooms.

Well done to everyone for showing enormous amounts or resilience, working your way through the different physical education stations and competing with such good sportsmanship in our Athletics Sports Day.

Please remember to encourage your child to read their take home reader/s every night. Please sign their diary to count as nights read for our class competition of most nights read. Please encourage your child to learn to read their heart words which are sent home after we have learnt them at school. If your child finds reading these words easy, they can work on spelling these words.

In Numeracy, during the first week we revised all of our Number curriculum including matching words to numerals, counting forwards and backwards, saying which numbers are larger or smaller, making numbers with base ten manipulatives and representing numbers in different ways by breaking for example 20 into 10 and 10, 18 and 2, 16 and 4.

During our second week we began learning about addition using strategies such as adding using fingers, counters, number lines, ten frames, friends of 10, holding the larger number in our head and counting on plus drawing items then counting how many all together and  understanding that 3+5 =8 and 5+3=8.

Prep/ One Guy Term 2 Student achievers

In Term 2, students nominate who they think has shown our school values of respect- treating others the way they would like to be treated, responsibility- doing the right thing and being trustworthy or resilience- the power to bounce back in the previous week. They nominate five students and then with closed eyed, they vote for who they think is deserving of this position. That student if then the Student Of The Week and gets to do all the special jobs around the school, has their own special chair and desk for the week and gets to take Lucky, our class teddy home for one week. The class then writes about this student and we complie their pages into a book for the Student Of The Week to keep forever.

Week 1: Dazzling Daxton

Week 2: Charismatic Cole

A huge congratulations to our student achievers; we are so proud of you for showing our school values of respect, responsibility and resilience. Certificates will be held at school and presented at assembly each fortnight.

This week's Literacy tip for parents:

Let your child see you reading and writing in everyday life – reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or reading street signs. This teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills in today’s world.
